Let’s all be very clear eyed about all of this. The current government and every other follow on government will lie, cheat, obscure, fudge and frig around the books but they will not go past 2% and I doubt they will actually even get that far.

And they will get away with it even with Trump and he will let them. They’ll figure out a way to give him some ego boosting win on another matter and lie to him about defence.

Edit: unless he hands the file to Vance, in which case even Melanie Joly will be reporting to the Armour School.
Canada need to understand they are in receive mode only at this point.

Trump47 has the House and Senate. So you are going to get assfucked hard unless you open your purse.

He’s going to kick you out of NORAD unless you get well above 2%. We don’t need Canada in NORAD anymore as we can use OTHR and other means to do what Canada was needed for before, and we can use Canada as the impact area for incoming.

Then your little economy is going to get destroyed, partial from American business that will be strongly motivated to leave Canada, and through tariffs.

Then we will take your water.

And thus the need for autonomy.

Not just autonomous toys but also an autonomous government.

Not sure I am following you there.

You are less than a 10th of the population, and significantly less than a 10th in many more areas - except land and fresh water.

You cannot be autonomous, and your parents just got sick and tired of paying your rent.

We have no desire or political will to do that. That is in part because we have been favouring butter over guns for half a century; in spite of the increasing cost of guns due to regular and defence industry inflation.

CPC or LPC, we're never spending that kind of dough unless the butter is threatened. I imagine tariffs will be more of a motivator than common sense....

Canadians have for half a century+ taken half of the Pearson legacy as the National gospel…being the peace broker of the developed world. Nobel award to Pearson notwithstanding, Canadians all too easily forget, or if younger, just don’t know/appreciate that Pearson also worked with Uncle Sam to bring nuclear weapons onto Canadian soil at the same time as the peacekeeper (not maker, btw) legacy was storming, forming and norming.

@rmc_wannabe, speaking of ‘butter’…this is where Canada will get its self-important non-competitive industrial ass handed to it…butter…and milk and eggs and cheese and softwood… USMC Trade 2 will make USMC Trade 1 look like a walk in the park.

Yep, pretty much. The water may be up for grabs though…doesn’t Nestle already control a chunk of it?

You aren’t serious, are you? Fortress Canada?

More than 77% of Canadian exports go the the US... talk about a lack of diversification leading to massive exposure to risk.

Who was in charge of building that strategic plan I wonder? ;)

Trump's victory sparks concerns over ripple effect on Canadian economy

https://army.ca/forums/javascript:;
Donald Trump's impending return to the White House has cast a spotlight on Canada-U.S. economic ties amid worries that the president-elect's protectionist stance could complicate the vast levels of trade between the two countries.

Some Canadian business leaders have expressed uneasiness over Trump's promise to introduce a universal 10 per cent tariff on all American imports.

A Canadian Chamber of Commerce report released last month suggested those tariffs would shrink the Canadian economy, resulting in around $30 billion per year in economic costs.

Fine. Buy me out and I will retire to the Isle of Man.

I know it is late in the game now. But the lack of any sense of autonomy got us here. Which is too bad because my sense is that we have just started to reach that stage in history and technology where it IS possible to defend Canada.

And not Fortress Canada. But Good Neighbour Canada.

Is Trump paying off the BC Port workers?

Is Trump paying off the BC Port workers?

I doubt it - with the NDP in power $250,000 per year for supervisors just isn't a big enough salary for those poor people down there on the (largely already automated) container terminal docks.... ;)

That's awesome. Make an enemy of that big friendly country to the North. Can't argue with that kind of logic. I'm totally in favour of spending more on defence, but Jesus. That kind of rhetoric will not make it easier to sell this to the general public, who, by all accounts, are actually coming around to the idea of increased defence spending.
