Ukraine has shown they still have their place to deliver a large amount of ordinance accurately. EW still takes out 60+ of ukrainian FPV drones. An AH with laser guided missiles wouldn't have that issue. You just need EW to protect from FPVs

You forgot the AW149. It fills a happy medium between the 159 and 101.

Most of these are replacements for old or ineffective kit, like the Griffon and Cyclone, and wouldn't require any additional personnel. But there's an element of "if you build it, they will come" at play. It's hard to entice new people to operate old and broken kit.

To be honest, the time may be sooner at hand than we think where we will need to have kit available for amounts of troops we never imagined needing ever again.

Might as well make it worth their while.

That and the shortage of troops is overstated. We have tons of recruits (CFLRC is completely full ATM) but we often don't have enough kit or instructors for these recruits. Taking care of one side of that deficiency to start is a great step.

The AH is the platform to deliver Loitering Munitions and small drones. See the Air Launched Effects program. Deep reconnaissance and screen is still easier with a manned AH than a drone in a heavy EW environment. Albeit still risky.

Aside from this. Pay raise. At some point they'll have to reach that conclusion. It's kinda hard to recruit and retain infanteers when most police services, fire services and a lot of trades pay more. That's just infanteers. Imagine the problem we have with specialized trades (like NDT) or subspecialties (like space).

We can talk about housing, spousal employment, healthcare for families, etc. All those issues suck. But a notable pay increase can paper over a substantial part of those problems immediately.

Not that Chrystia Freeland will win. But her suggestion of 50% increase for the Reg F, is heading in the right direction.

What we need is to put on our big boy pants and actually run and develop our economy like a real G7 country.

Way too many Canadians were extremely happy to be a resource colony for the US and now they are surprised the Americans are treating us with the contempt reserved for resource colonies. Worse, people just want to double down harder.

I think the current US administration's view of politics if far too short term, to the detriment of America and the rest of the world.

Forget short term view. Can we please stop pretending Trump is some kind of 3D chess genius? He is a grifter who has come into office with a cabal of grifters. His personal benefit is all that matters. He's fixated on what he perceives as a legacy. Hence the obsession with adding territory.

It's not just us in trouble. And it's not just the Europeans. Imagine sitting in Taipei, Seoul and Tokyo watching this. And knowing that the American people are fully capable of electing this again. Zero chance you can trust them. On defence or trade. And when you're next door to China those are linked.

The democratic world has to plan for a world where the American people no longer see free trade, free markets and maybe even democracy itself in their interest. It's a scary thought. And naturally we all want to self-soothe and tell ourselves it will get better. It won't. They'll get worse. The sooner we get on with the job of preparing the better off we'll all be.

There will be others who can practice populism as effectively as him. Doesn't have to be a direct successor. And doesn't have to be next term. The point here is that now everybody else knows how easily the American voter can be turned. And that includes Moscow and Beijing. Can you imagine how much they'll ramp up info ops to keep getting more Trump like leaders elected? So there will be more Trumpesque leaders in the US. And they will simply go from one chaotic nutcase to the next. All while the chaos creates space for China and Russia.
