Movie thing. Not a real world thing. Why not park a few satellites over Yemen in a geosynchronous orbit and when someone launchs a drone follow them home and drop a cruise missile on them.
The GDF-005 was looked at for Gulf War 1 on the tanker, instead of the 40mm boffins. Unfortunately, they are not Marin ized and would not stay serviceable long in that environment. The production lines for lasers aren't open yet.
On the other hand there are a lot of autocannons in the 30 to 76mm range with production lines for their ammunition open.
Strapping a couple of these on board might make some friends -

35MM Oerlikon Skyguard SWE - The Royal Canadian Artillery Museum
First developed in the late 1950s, the Oerlikon 35mm is one of the most widely used modern anti-aircraft guns. Used by the Canadian Army 1989 to 2005, the guns provided low-level air defence for two Canadian NATO airfields in Germany. Normally controlled in pairs by a Skyguard radar, the GDF-005...en.rcamuseum.com
Rumours abound that Canada still has some of those in storage (makes me wonder why 4GS has got their hands on them yet, if so).
Or these?

Big guns find new life
Currently, some of the 40mm guns are in the process of being transferred to museums and public parks; one gun weapon system has landed on a golf course.www.lookoutnewspaper.com
Geosynchronous weather satellites orbit at about 35,500km, low earth orbit satellites like Star Link orbit at around 500-600km.Why not park a few satellites over Yemen in a geosynchronous orbit and when someone launchs a drone follow them home and drop a cruise missile on them.
Is that because the area is too large to monitor effectively?Movie thing. Not a real world thing.
There are other, better ways of doing what you suggest.
And you can't do geosynchronous close to earth?Geosynchronous weather satellites orbit at about 35,500km, low earth orbit satellites like Star Link orbit at around 500-600km.
Better idea instead of dropping a Cruise missile. How about a tungsten carbide rod from orbit. Why not park a few satellites over Yemen in a geosynchronous orbit and when someone launchs a drone follow them home and drop a cruise missile on them.
Some say those already exist.Better idea instead of dropping a Cruise missile. How about a tungsten carbide rod from orbit.
You want to put the fear of God in someone or at least the fear of you . This would do it.
How about the newer Bofors 40mm L/70?The GDF-005 was looked at for Gulf War 1 on the tanker, instead of the 40mm boffins. Unfortunately, they are not Marin ized and would not stay serviceable long in that environment.
The boffins are done. No parts/unsafe.
Those white lab coats always were a problem. The boffins are done. No parts/unsafe.
No.And you can't do geosynchronous close to earth?
Some…Some say those already exist.
Or like a very high flying plane or drone…No.
@Oldgateboatdriver gave a great explanation. Essentially geosynchronous orbits are great for weather satellites and other systems that work on a massive scale.
To get precise locations/imagery you need low earth orbiting satellites, and they make several laps around the planet a day. To maintain continuous coverage over a specific area you'd need a lot of satellites dedicated to that one task. It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be impractical.
I had the absolute joy of watching one of those twin 35mm open up while defending an airfield from a mock air attack...and HOLY SHIT those things can spew some hate downrangeThe production lines for lasers aren't open yet.

Like a pointed stick?. How about a tungsten carbide rod from orbit.

That's how you get wedding party bombings, because they are happy to get rid of the opposing tribesman and their relatives.Or, you know, bribe enough of the right people - in the right places - so your HUMINT network is remarkably effective
