CRCN Message on the Steward Occupation Town Hall (Steward trade elimination)

There are specific billets associated with the scullery; one belongs to the MSED. Because there are no training bunks when the ship is full it's used for QL3 qualified martechs that need to do their OJT.

Usually there are a few people in the other juniour billets so you rotate them around, but you have apprentice mechanics/electricians scrubbing pots and peeling potatoes.

Nature of the beast, and did it a few times myself as a phase 6 but it's not a 'secondary duty', it's the person's full time job and they are working on shifts.

Similarly, the steward jobs are full time jobs., and they are also on shifts (with a few doing night steward jobs, which helps out the night cook and does the mids meals as well as overnight prep).
Personally, I think this is a decision that was long overdue. The difficulty will be getting from where we are now to where we want to be.

There is going to be a lot of friction in between those two points as well. Concessions will need to be made.

I don't disagree, just that this just doesn't seem to have a real plan.

The Martech disaster is slowly breaking us, and lots of things aren't being maintained properly because the training/experience is gone, so unless there is a real transition plan already in place, not really confident it won't just be another shitshow.

Agree, Stewards also have an operational function onboard Ship so what this is going to look like will need to be fleshed out in short order.

Something else that I am unsure if it was really thought about:

A substantial portion of Stewards are women and it was a trade many women wanted to serve in. What impact is this going to have on their retention?

Steward also has a lot of skills that are directly transferrable to other industries like fine dining, service economy, etc.

It wasn't exactly a trade without transferrable skills despite perceptions which seem based on false pretenses that they were Officer Servants.

Part of of apparently the Forces long term plans to put itself out of business by discouraging retention and screwing up recruitment.
The truly scary part of this is that they're not actually trying to do this in point of fact they're trying to the opposite.

Sure it's your job when your actually working in scullery. Buts it's not your "job", it's a secondary task that has been alloted to certain departments and it allows them to boost numbers.

Like most billets people are posted in and then moved around as needed. If you look at my MPRR you will see 3 entries for "Laundry Operations". Spanning roughly 9 years on ships as a LS but I only ever worked in Laundry once for a month. I would never have said my job is laundrymen.

Stewards have some very transferable skills and a very close relationship with the NPF/PSP world. I have no doubt those who choose to leave will find work.

Yep, a lot of the Steward's job revolves around supporting Ship's Husbandry, Morale & Welfare, Cleaning, etc. They also support the PAs and free up technicians to focus on other tasks by making up a substantial portion of Specialist Teams.

If anything, the positions should reallocated to augment the Deck Department and the Logistics Department so as to continue to allow technicians to focus on their core tasks.

For a long time, Steward had a reputation as one of the few hard sea trades that didn’t have a retention problem. It was regularly in the Green, even, although I haven’t seen the most recent numbers. Something to consider when you’re tinkering with peoples career paths might be to start with those that are already the most broken — the potential upside is big and if you screw up you can’t really do that much more damage.

Just this simple sailors opinion but the canteen and NPF warehousing, ordering and distribution should fall to Stores, and I would predict we'd need a MS or P2 and an S1.

The books should go to FSA and I don't suspect they would need augmentation. Or that S1 could be the FSA for NPF.

The rest of billets should go to the Galley and Deck.

That's just my opinion. :)

That makes a lot of sense, Deck could also takeover CCT with some augmentation. I mean they already do rigging and you need rigging to extract casualties at times.

Deck doesn't need to be involved in CCT. There are still the MMTs, Clerks and Cooks.

I see minimal impact on CCT and CBRN.

Offer Stewards Met Tech... We need people who will sail. The job training sucks, but once you're in it, the job is high responsibility but also offers a lot of freedom.
...right when the first RCN Met Techs are qualified.

Coincidence? I think not. :sneaky:

I don't think many are interested in trades that have a probability of a posting away from the coast. I know this is a concern for them.

Yes, that was the concern for my Brother's spouse. It's one thing to enter the CAF training system fresh, it's a totally different thing to re-enter the system, with all its warts and inefficiencies, with family commitments, established roots, etc and uproot that entirely for a song and a prayer.

Unfortunately I think a number will choose the exit stalls unless they are shown that a good plan exists to retain and retrain them.
