CMMA - replacing the CP140 Aurora

From the presser, it looks like Textron and Netjets have had a long relationship. Did Bombardier really even have a chance?
Long time dance partners, yes. I don’t know exec/corp aviation BD plans, but the Challenger 350 (and the 650 as well) certainly fits in the same category as the Cessna Latitude, Longitude and Ascend. It’s a kick in the junk, even if Bombardier wants to concentrate on the Global Express and battle Gulfstream at the top end of the vizier market.

Well also news in a related area. Bombardier scores a win. This is the RC-12 replacement.

Not surprising - they have been pitching that mission for a while now. Bombardier also built the E-11 Battlefield Air Combat Node (BACN) which was successful.

The issue in this instance is that Bombardier is trying to use a proven platform in one area (business transport and high-altitude surveillance) in a totally different area (ASW, whether high or low, with munitions).

Was at a brief today. One of the participants told me that Bombardier was told by the government to STFU about their fake airplane.
I heard, from a civilian source in the telecom business, that whatever they call the Industry Depot now (Innovation?) is fed up to the teeth with Bombardier and a few others who are, constantly, trying to sell vapourware. No one objects too much when a company comes in with an off the wall presentation looking for a "hook" upon which they might hang some project, but officials are tired of companies that are nearly camped out in the corridors with a "made in Canada solution" to problems that don't even exist.

It’s ISED - Innovation, Science, and Economic Development - Canada.

Probably TB and others getting pissed that BBD has something less than a paper airplane, Industrial Tech Benefits or not.

Don’t forget that a P-8A buy would also have ITBs, such as potentially CAE providing the simulators, engines (or significant engine parts) made in Canada, etc.

Also…again…an actual airplane used by our allies and based off one of the most common airliner platforms in the world.

The Boeing P-8 Poseidon is a Boeing 737-800 which is a civilian plane converted into a ASW platform. Not sure why the Bombardier platform could not do something similar.

The P8 exists and is in service. Bombardier has no existing airframe with the systems integration that they are proposing.

For the same reason Davies got cut out of the ship building contract. They couldn't meet the criteria specified to make a bid. The P8 is based upon the 737 true but there are structural changes required in order to install doors that can be opened at 25,000 feet. There are re-enforcing requirements for external drop points plus the wiring harness changes required and those are just a couple of mechanical differences. Installing antennae, sensors, MAD, etc. all need changes to that power requirements and need to be certified for the application which is another huge expense and very time consuming. We need what, 15 aircraft? Writing off the development costs on 15 air-frames would probably double the cost for a smaller a/c.

That is the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

Aside from the valid comments by others, Bombardier also doesn’t own any airframe that has the same range as a 737 - despite what their glossy brochure suggests.
