CAN-USA 2025 Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

Who Knows Idk GIF by Professional Bull Riders (PBR)

Hence the guesses a few posts up. It's the opening salvo in completely redefining the relationship between the countries.

You mean among the countries.

Canada is just the test case.

I believe those that assert he wants to get rid of the income tax in the US. The replacement revenue will be tariffs.

The only things up for debate are how much and on what and how much can be raised. A 4 year experiment.

Colombia was the test case - and they caved in less than 12hrs.

Columbia was a continuation of a known practice against a familiar target. Canada is a different thing. We are the demonstration that what was a weapon used occasionally against opponents is to be re-established as the basis of trade amongst nations, including the friendliest of nations.

Charging mail is an ancient practice.

Oh look, Trump himself says there is nothing that can be done to stop tariffs.

It makes no difference what we do. We are not dealing with a stable ally.

I agree with you when you take Trump at his word and say there will be tariffs. There is a solid paper trail among his advisors that give credence to his publicly voiced intentions.

What we can do is negotiate how much and what he will accept in mitigation.

Stable? I'd say unpredictable. I think he thinks that is a feature and not a bug.
Ally? Sometimes we have chosen some unique means of demonstrating our affections. Regardless of the government of the day.

...

I like Canada even though it doesn't look much like the place I came to in 1966.

So... Add export taxes on top of the US tariffs on energy exports to create even more pressure on US consumers while also generating tax revenues.

Then start a PR campaign blaming all the cost spike on Trump's tariffs.

And so it begins. Never let a crisis go to waste.

Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney said he will scrap the “divisive” consumer carbon tax, instead proposing an elaborate plan that includes tariffs on certain items from countries without carbon taxes, making heavy Canadian industrial emitters pay more and offering consumer incentives for purchasing “eco-responsible” items.

The return of the tariff economy - carbonmail.

To be honest I actually prefer that solution over the carbon sales tax. But that's just me.

Maybe you missed it. There is no négociations. It has been tried now for months.

His latest presser on this just revealed what this is really about. He doesn’t give a single eff about our border or spending or trade deficit etc. The goal posts keep moving because he had to have a bogey man.

It’s about generating revenue. Plain and simple.

Careful. Alberta will have a tantrum over that…

It’s never too late for Canada and Canadians too start focusing on their own national interests and too undertake things that they fully control.

Canada can scrap the planned carbon tax increases that are still scheduled.

Canada can immediately start disassembling interprovincial trade barriers.

Canada can start development of O&G export routes to the coasts.

Canada can make itself more attractive to foreign investment.

Canada can spend more on defence.

Canada can take national security more seriously.

No matter how much Canadians dislike Trump, Canada can’t make him do anything.

We can either spend our efforts fighting the US in a trade war, where is winning is us remaining as vulnerable as before or we spend our efforts building our own internal strength and building our global capacity.

I expect we will expend our efforts fighting the US while ignoring any attempts to make our selves more resilient and diversified.

Or invite Russia et al to a meeting about artic security without inviting Uncle Sam ;)

Trump was inaugurated 11 days ago.

Could you clarify your statement please?
