CAN-USA 2025 Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

I think this is the same guy who was telling anyone who would listen that he was going to be the Treasury Secretary and that Trump wasn’t going to let RFK Jr. anywhere near HHS.

I don’t think he knows what’s in his boss’ head.
Donald Trump is....words fail me. Part of it is his not very diplomatic approach to dealing with....anyone or anything.

He's blunt, tends to piss people off, and seems to constantly change his mind.

And people hated Dubya....but at least he was kind of predictable.

What's the over/under on whether we suddenly announce some sole-sourced military funding event before tomorrow morning in an effort to appease Trump?

Another 18-24 F35's? Another 4 P-8's? Maybe 2-3 squadrons of Black Hawks? What else?

Well sure. Why wouldn’t he exempt Canada’s single greatest export to the US whilst purporting to be mad about the trade deficit?

From our perspective- we have a balanced trade relationship, with a completely separate, mutually beneficial oil arrangement. Trump complaining about the imbalance while exempting the oil is talking out both sides of his mouth, because oil is the source of the deficit

From his perspective- why should he care about balancing the aggregate "other" part of the trade relationship? why view them separately?

He wants our oil and minerals, as cheap as he can get them. (Statements to the contrary are posturing)
He wants our manufacturing jobs.
He wants our dairy markets open.
He wants a balanced trade ledger (at worst, I'm sure he would love a surplus), while maintaining the resource imports. The impact of that relationship on our economy is Canada problem, not a DJT problem.

There's a couple of problems with that 'appeasement' thing most people seem to be forgetting about these days...

-Namer APC's for the Military Police.
-Rotax 850 Turbo skidoos for LOSV courses (to really get the medical releases going)
-Full work from home suites for HRA's and other office workers.
-Living quarters that aren't full mould and asbestos

To be kind, he may not know what's in his boss' head any more than anyone looking at POTUS47 from the outside in.

“Because it’s 2025!”

Honesty, this and then Carney and Freeland with their “I’ll cut the carbon tax” and “we won’t implement the capital gains tax increase just yet” should make sentient Canadians wary.

I have yet to hear “we are instituting immediate approvals to support Canadian O&G transportation to tidewater.”

A 25-per-cent U.S. tariff is, however undesirable, very much survivable.

As I have been arguing --- Canada pre-freetrade, worked.
And if GDP did drop it could be recovered by exporting more, and by attracting the investments necessary to get those exports to market.

Nor will the jobs suddenly disappear on Saturday.
Pre FTA, Canada had nowhere near the end user taxation that we have today. If we roll back to 1987, we have to go all the way or collapse completely.

Now it’s march 1st. Maybe.

Trump’s press secretary says report of March 1 tariffs ‘false’; Canadian source says no word
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says reporting indicating U.S. President Donald Trump intends to delay imposing tariffs on Canada until March 1 is “false.”

“I was just with the president in the Oval Office, and I can confirm that tomorrow, the Feb. 1 deadline that President Trump put into place… continues,” she said.

“The president will be implementing tomorrow a 25 per cent tariff on Mexico, 25 per cent tariffs on Canada, and a 10 per cent tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country which has killed tens of millions of Americans. These are promises made and promises kept by the president.”
The moving target keeps moving. Apparently the tariffs are back on for February 1st.

If you click on that link now, the White House press secretary is now saying it’s false.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen countless flags, bumper stickers and other visual messages saying “F*CK TRUDEAU”. So where are the comparable “F*CK TRUMP” messages?

Those of us to the left of center have more class.

(as do those to the right of center, who comparatively are not flying Palestinian flags)
