Canada/US Border Integrity Thread

Someone should be asking Trump how this got here and how it made it all the way through the continental US.

I can give his answer - "because Biden was in power when it made the trip. I didn't take charge until Monday afternoon and this was already well on its way to Canada. If I had been in power the border would have been closed and those drugs would never have made it into the USA."

Spitballing but maybe it was done by design to see where it goes and who it goes to. Looks like they knew it was coming so maybe some good intelligence work?
You’re talking about a controlled delivery. Sounds like this was seized by CBSA on request by police acting presumably on some solid intelligence. A controlled delivery is normally allowed to arrive at its destination, which allows for police to get a warrant and a tactical team to yell “surprise!” and arrest those receiving it. CBSA wouldn’t make the seizure in those cases.

Reading between the lines, sounds like Toronto Police probably developed some solid sources and got a line on a wholesale shipment.

That’s a massive amount of drugs seized, particularly for on land versus at sea. Fantastic work.

Good thing that metric is Ontario/Land/Sea.

Now if it was Quebec/Air, we’d be talking about 4,000+ kilos, not just 835kg. 😉

Really?

You can see the breakdown here. CBSA is getting the 2nd biggest amount of that pot from what I can see.
But they should be getting the largest chuck. Border protection is, quite literally, their job. I can appreciate that hiring and training takes time and that, in the interim, assistance from police services and even the military makes sense, but when you pay other agencies to supplement, you send the message that this is temporary.

RCMP does too many different things, IMO. CBSA should be made to inherit everything to do with the border. Though that would require a major shift in mentality from the old tax collectors in senior management.

That’s a different argument than the one being posited that CBSA is getting no money thrown at them.

You mean the old-school CBSA types…

For an agency with “border” in its name, they aren’t allowed to patrol the border away from the port of entry.
Therein lies the crux. It's not a matter of money, but of authorities.

That shift in mentality is happening and may be greatly accelerated by a change in government to the south and potentially one here. What's also needed is a change in legislation to allow it to happen. Make no mistake, the CBSA union has been demanding this for years.

Yup, I’ve seen the ads. From the union’s standpoint it would be a significant increase in dues paying members.

I’m trying to imagine what a handover from RCMP IBET to CBSA would look like. The training, equipment, and logistics would be something else.

CBSA would need a big change in established strength to pull this off. Like every other LEA, recruiting is a challenge and schoolhouse capacity is limited.

Training might not be as bad as you think. All armed BSOs get some good bits of relevant training already. Training on new equipment would be a short term issue but the training team is very flexible with a wide skill set. The logistics of acquiring that equipment is where the challenge really lies. And we know GoC procurement takes a loooong time on a good day. Have you got your new pistol yet?

2 years in the CAF then transfer to the CBSA Border Patrol?
