U.S. Annexing Canada (split fm Liberal Minority thread)

Because the Republic to our south is such a great thing to emulate?

It maybe not a great time to try and convince Canadians that being a republic is the way to go.

I don't know why people think its a binary option between the either the UK Royal Family or chaos.

Either way, people are noticing the inaction of the King and our mother country. And I expect support for the monarchy to further slide.

The British have always put their interests above ours . Long before we were even a country.
They've put reality over sentiment.... again .
I'm actually astounded that people do not understand that.
I actually feel sorry for Charles none of the options before him are pleasant. In fact I not too sure if he really has any .

The King can't act unless the CDN Federal Gov't asks him to act. I expect the meeting today between Trudeau and The King will clarify what, if anything, the Feds would like The King to say or do.

As been pointed out time and time again, the King cannot and will not say anything until the GoC tells him what to say and when to say it. As Czech_pivo said above, Trudeau's (although he is the poster boy for lame duck) meeting today with the king may change things.

Oh, it's not. There are all sorts of variations of republics; some with a combined HOS/HOG, others with separate roles. But most people just see our closest one and would not view that as a favourable alternative right now. Heck, most people don't understand our own system let alone others.

As a nation we can have that discussion, but it's not as simple as calling up the GG and saying 'thanks for coming out but we're going in a different direction'.

Given the Liberals’ policy of benign neglect to the institution of the monarchy, I would be surprised if he even brought it up.

Nothing wrong with a republican system of government.

For amusement, see this list of systems and the countries that use them. In particular, note where the countries that most people would think of as well-governed are listed, and where the US is listed. Obviously the US has been able to make republicanism work. If it isn't "broken" (overwrought reactions to policy differences are not evidence of failure) at the end of Trump's term, it'll be difficult to argue that the US has a poor system of government. We can't know until the experiment has run.

I really didn't mean to derail this this much.

My point is Canadians are paying attention to the reaction this is getting from our King and mother country. And elsewhere for that matter. I think Canadians long expected the world would come to our aid. I think for the first time many (most ?) are now realizing countries have no friends or allies, they have interests.

Now we will see if the King has anything to say after he meets with Trudeau.

The King is a symbol and a figurehead, nothing more. His reaction is as important to me as the reaction from the potted plant on my desk because as was noted above he will only say what he is advised to say by our Government.

Far more important to me is the reaction/non-reaction from the elected heads of Government of our Allies. Those are actually meaningful as its the actions of those Governments to support or not support us that actually have an impact.

Exactly, which is why my ire is directed at Starmer.
