U.S. Annexing Canada (split fm Liberal Minority thread)

That doesn't help us one bit. Buying something less capable just to 'stick it' to the US? Oh wow we sure showed them!
I think there are quite a number of people here who would argue that the F-35, despite its many advantages, is not better in every way than some of the contenders in the new fighter competition. For Stealth…great. But what happens when that advantage is lost? I’m not suggesting this simply to “stick it to them” but rather, if they’re going to play hardball with us then we should do what’s in our best interests. And that means re-examining what’s best for Canada and not simply staying loyal to the U.S.

At the end of the day, we only need to hunker down for 4, perhaps 8 years at the most, then the tide will turn yet again.
Actually its about 20 months, give or take. The primaries are in 2026, and historically they have gone against a sitting president. I'm not sure which MAGA/Democratic seats are in play, but it is conceivable that the Democrats could win back either the HoR or Senate, or possibly both.

All of the House of Representatives will be up - they do every seat every two years - and, at present, at least 35 Senate seats. If I understand the current composition correctly, the Republicans will be defending 22 currently held seats, while the Democrats try to hold on the 13. I can’t speak to how many seats are likely to be in play.

Anyone thinking like this shouldn't be allowed anywhere near decision making space. Particularly after the passive handwaving or blissful ignorance of the last decade and much longer of the real threats (CCP) to our country.
So which country has posed a existential threat to Canada in the last 200 years? Only one country has actively invaded us and that is our neighbour to the South. China is a problem but they aren’t going to annex us (or attempt to anytime soon).

Fortress North America is accurate, no one is invading North America. That being said the US could easily take over the North if they so wished. And they are actively talking about doing so.

They maybe our ally but allies generally don’t speak of annexing each other.

If you don’t see them speaking of annexing as the threat it is, I don’t know what to tell you.

As you said, they have been speaking of it for the past 200 years (250 actually). For the first 100 we relied on the Brits to do the fighting for us. Then we relied on them to keep investing in us and giving us privileged access to their market and safe conduct internationally. That kept us going until the US broke the Bank of England (two world wars saving democracy will do that to you) and we cosied up to them instead.

Maybe it is about time we figured out how to live on our own.

Lots of smaller successful countries out there with a lot less going for them than us, and in more dangerous neighbourhoods.

This is why I personally would love to see a strong alliance between Australia, UK, New Zealand and Canada. All similar countries with similar governments and similar interests.

Canadians like to think we are peaceful when the reality is we are currently harmless. Being peaceful implies the ability to do harm yet choosing not to. Trump is exploiting how harmless we are for his advantage currently.

Personally I thought manifest destiny was mostly dead, but this presidency is proving otherwise.

43 kg of fentanyl (plus or minus) were seized on the US border area and attributed to Canada...

Is that the extent of our problem?

investigators seized approximately half a tonne of hard drugs, including … 55 kilograms of fentanyl, 390 kilograms of methamphetamine, 35 kilograms of cocaine, 15 kilograms of MDM, and six kilograms of cannabis,”
investigators seized 89 firearms, including handguns, AR15 assault rifles and submachine guns, many of which were loaded and ready to use.

And this one a few days earlier.

Both from October of 2024.

The only problem is…the Americans seem to be fully supporting him after a month of his deeds and misdeeds. It’s hard to separate one from the other now.
I conclude differently when I observe the behaviour of Democrats and other Democratic party supporters.

They kept touting the record mandate they have
