Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

And they’ve tightened up the rules a bit to avoid a few issues….
Bit in the upcoming race, the Liberal party says it will be updating the requirements to become a registered Liberal as a way to protect “the integrity of our democratic process, while still engaging as many people as possible.”

To be a registered Liberal voter, a person must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or have status under the Indian Act. Registered voters must also be 14 years old and not be a member of any other federal political party in Canada.

That’s an improvement at least. They’re gonna need some sort of verification though; I’ve seen people posting about already setting up multiple phony memberships with patently silly names and addresses.

Personally I'm not overly happy about the fact that a non-citizen can vote for the leader of a Federal (Provincial?) political party. Does that not open things up to 'Foreign Actors' influencing the Canadian political landscape? Does anyone know if this is something that can occur in other Parliamentary government systems - UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ?

That should be fun considering the Liberals laissez-faire approach to background checks.

We have plenty of citizens of convince who are more loyal to their homelands.

The nation needs a viable somewhat right-of-centre and a somewhat left-of-centre party. A one-party nation would result in even more corruption and incompetence than we’ve been seeing these last few years.
For sure. If the Tories came back from one mating pair in the House, so can Team Red. That said, they’ll have a lot of soul searching & fixing to do before Canadians trust them again. We’ll see …

They will. If they were smart they would swallow the NDP and Greens though. And United left, if you will.

That’s the easier option for sure. Problem is Team Red has to become more like Martin Liberals, so we’ll see if they get that.
Seems like we are as close to a united Liberal-NDP on policy that we have been. Personally i prefer my Liberals a little bluer than the current edition. I dont think a merger would help that. The conservative split just didnt have the time to solidify like the left's has. I think i prefer the option we have where when one party gets tired or pushes things too far the electorate as a whole replaces them with the other. While not unlike what happens to the south i do think we have more voters that move their vote around up here. I think that is a valuable thing

If we could never again use the term “mating pair” with regards to any of the members of Parliament, that would be lovely.

It’s actually an improvement. At least it’s a citizen or permanent resident. Previously it could be a temporary foreign worker (like from China’s United Front Work Department) of a foreign student…conveniently provided transportation to vote by various LPC riding associations…

There are plenty of citizens and PRs who are involved with the United Front Work Department.

But yes, it is an improvement. Let’s see if there’s any vetting.

Well, for historic reasons, the Irish can vote in UK elections, and apparently become both members of UK parties and the government.

He supported the EU, opposed Brexit and organized Labour's campaign to deliver British campaign workers to the US to help Kamala Harris. Now Chief of Staff to Keir Starmer PM.

It's surprising to see Joly not running considering her speech in September saying it's time a woman leads the United Nations.

I wonder why she wouldn't take this opportunity to lead the Liberal party and protect women's rights. She must be on Team Freeland.
Maybe its because she wants a chance to lead the party to victory and not to extinction
