Did a Liberal candidate offer a bribe to an NDP candidate to drop out of the race? Angry in T.O. at 10:44 AM

Oh. My. God.

The place is Abbotsford, British Columbia. The Liberal candidate is David Oliver.

The NDP candidate is Jeffrey Hansen-Carlson.

A formal letter (a copy of which was received by this blogger), was sent to the Commissioner for Elections Canada:

OTTAWA
January 12, 2006

Mr. Raymond Lavigne
Commissioner for Elections Canada
257 Slater St.
Ottawa, ON, K1A 0M6

Mr. Lavigne,

It has just been brought to my attention that on the evening of January 10th, 2005 the Liberal campaign in Abbotsford requested a meeting with our candidate in that electoral district.

Please find attached a notarized statement by our candidate Jeffrey Hansen-Carlson of the events that took place. At this meeting a proposal was made which appears to be in contravention of section 481 (1) of the Election Act

481. (1) Every person is guilty of an offence who, during an election period, directly or indirectly offers a bribe to influence an elector to vote or refrain from voting or to vote or refrain from voting for a particular candidate.

This allegation is a very serious matter, and questions the integrity of the Liberal campaign and could involve a serious breach of the Act governing the electoral process in Canada. I urge you to investigate this matter as soon as possible.

If I can be of any assistance in these matters, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely yours,

Eric Hebert
Federal Secretary, New Democratic Party of Canada

It's true:  All politics is local!

well - that was brilliant!
Just reinforces my belief that I don't trust "any" politician.

Yet another thing the liberals have to lie and cover up BUT hey, my bet is that the canadian people will still vote liberal.

Liberals axe candidate accused of offering job to opponent

CBC News

The Liberal party has dumped one of its B.C. candidates following allegations he offered an NDP candidate a job to drop out of the race and support the Liberals.

In an affidavit filed with Elections Canada, Jeffrey Hansen-Carlson says that Liberal candidate David Oliver and his campaign manager came to see him on Tuesday night.

Hansen-Carlson alleges the two men guaranteed him a win in the next municipal election, and offered him a job in Ottawa – if Oliver went on to win the election on Jan. 23.

"Subsequent to consultations with the national campaign, Prime Minister Martin decided that it was in the best interests of the party that Mr. Oliver cease campaigning as a Liberal candidate and that he not sit in the Liberal Caucus should he be elected," the Liberal Party said in a statement.

Martin has also asked Oliver to no longer publicly identify himself as the Liberal candidate, the statement says, and directed the British Columbia Liberal campaign to repossess any Liberal party promotional material bearing Oliver's name.

Hansen-Carlson said earlier he was in shock after he received the offer.

"Here is a friend of mine – I consider David Oliver to be a friend – here's a friend of mine who has cornered me in the most awkward way, making me to be one of his political pawns."

Hansen-Carlson says he listened to what the Liberals had to say, and then immediately went to the NDP to tell them what happened.

He says an official complaint has been notarized, and filed with Elections Canada.

"I don't care to gain from this. What is important and why I came forward is that what Mr. Oliver and Mr. Kalon did is completely inappropriate, and coming forward was a matter of principle."

The federal Tories dumped a B.C. candidate who faces charges of attempting to smuggle a car and booze across the Canada-U.S. border.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper said on Thursday that it's too late to replace Derek Zeisman as a candidate, but that he wouldn't be allowed to join the caucus.

Scott, Belinda, Gurmant and now this.  A pattern?

Seems a little fishy to me. The Grit candidate would have to be incredibly stupid to believe that he could take the riding after somehow swinging all of those NDP votes. This may be British Columbia's most conservative riding, in the heart of white bread bible country. Last election's numbers...

Welcome to BC, where your local Liberal Candidate is either a "parachute candidate" from outside the riding (like ours in Maple Ridge/Mission), or bribed from another party (like Ujel Dosanj, ex NDP Premier).  The desperation to find anyone to run for the Liberals could get a bag lady the nomination, except none of them would lower themselves to do it.

You think that they would have learned when they tried those things in the last election.

Liberals

They not only want to buy your Vote,

They will buy your Candidate too!

then I look at the math of the PC campaign promisses..........
will be interesting to see how they intend to pay for those.

PC have stated that Fed depts will be restricted to to cost of living increases only.
so I wonder what that will do to the CF and all this wonderful stuff the CDS has been getting us.... anyone want to wager that the day Mr Harper comes to the PMs office - everything gets put on hold?

isn't a scandel only if it means something.
ie the Liberals have had "all these scandals" in the past and yet the sheep still elect them.

Geo, I could understand a "strategic pause" in the procurements, a couple of weeks perhaps, but I believe the CDS can sell his plan to a new Conservative government just as readily as he sold it to the Liberals.

We'll see, I guess.

The PC's would probably want to make it theirs so to speak.  Hopefully that means adding stuff as oppossed to reducing or cutting things already in the mix.

I believe Harper indicated that spending in certain areas would be allowed to increase.  Defence was one of the areas mentionned, however I've become a bit cynical; it always seems new governments find "things we didn't expect" when they take office and get a look at the books.  The Tories have earned considerable credit for their pro-military stance so it'd take a fair amount of backpeddling to back down on their obligations now.

Geo:

The platform calls for all departments except DND and Indian Affairs (clear federal responsibilities) to be held to population and inflation increases.

DND and Indian Affairs will be funded at rates above those.

DND is to get the money the Liberals promised PLUS 5.3 BCAD more over 5 years, meaning that the CDS should have the money to fund what he is looking for - the commitment to Airlift is still in the Tory plan.

As well, as many folks have pointed out in the past, one of the fastest ways to speed up procurement and increase the bang for the bucks available is to change the regulations with respect to government purchasing.

What do you bet that Public Works and Government Services isn't due for a major shake-up very quickly?

Kirkhill...
colour me jaded... I will believe gov't promisses when I see em delivered to my proverbial front door.

Geo:

Me too.  But the other guy hasn't been delivering.
