Driver Corner Part 1

Speaking of you... I had a guy come up to me the other say with "TRANSMISSION" on his rank. I was kind a confused until I thought about it. At first I was like who in the heck wears something like that...heck mine should be labeled as engine...why not...

Yeah, I put up the French slip-on as well.

My old Regiment was officially bilingual, so I could get away with it. But you have no idea how many times I've been in the field, and some guy thinks I'm a specialist V tech, and asks me to look at his bloody truck  ;)

As for ground guilding from the rear... remember if you are ground guilding... if you can't see the driver, he can't see you. Stand in a clear spot and move with the truck. Just remember saftey. ie.. pot holes..traffic from behind, cats...whatever.
;D
What is this strange devise called a "Ground Guide"?

Where can I buy one?

Oh, and by the way, even if you, as the driver, hit something while backing up with the use of a ground guide...you are responsible!
"Must employ a reliable ground guide"

Hey, sarge, can I help it if Bloggins is an ID 10 T?
out

That is something...if you need to use a ground-guide, responsibility should be shared.

As it stands, if I don't like you, I can guide your truck right into the CO's car, and you hold responsibility  ;)

Yup, that's about the size of it, SD.
Around our refueling garage, we do our own backing.
The only time I/we realllllyyyyyy needed a ground guide is when I/we used to back in the Oskosh Snow Eliminator 2 into the Heavy hanger.  It had dual wing plows that like to snag on the garage door sides.
Gawd, I miss my tonka snow plow.... :crybaby:

Ground guide for the Artillery is important, you have Gunners holding the trails up and they are out of sight of the driver. Note your driver drives, the ground guide guides. Guide signals stop you stop, they say left / right you turn the proper way. No hessitation. I always told my drivers your the one driving if you feel uncomfortable then stop and ask questions. If you feel uncomfortable backing up then lets practice, if you cant understand what it is I want you to do stop I will yell at you, say a few profanities and explain what it is I want you to do, then we will carry on. Last if it was just them backing up in a parking spot I would stand behind them in view of their mirrors and let them know if they were going to hit something. If they felt uncomfortable doing that then be prepared for the slagging to follow from a few of the others.
One thing that is important is prior to a road move you and your crew talk about what it is each is responsible for, you talk about how to turn back on the road, you talk about broken vehicle, you talk about speed and so on.

I always found on our road moves the Truckers would complain about the F*&(^%$ Army trucks and how they were moving so slow. One day I had a handheld talk about and asked them how it was we were passing them going up hill on the Snoqualmie pass if we were so slow. No replies and also no further grumblings. Once at the top of the hill they passed us going down the other side and flashed their lights.

No amount of ground guiding will make up for bad driving.
Every person who drives thee trucks should get a full day a month min to practice drving them, this includes off road usage (skill levels of the ability of the trucks what they can and cant do). Practice convoy driving, actions on in a convoy, city driving, backing up on their own and with ground guides, and self recovery and recovery of another vehicle. All this coupled into a training plan with a few other things and drivers would be excellant at what they do.
I agree we should use Convoy signs when travelling as such, We should also have designate lead and follow vehicles. These are able to travel to the front or back of the convoy with ease. A possible police/MP escort if travelling in more then a 4 vehicle formation.

I hate when driving through bigger cities ie. Edmonton or Calgary, on your own in an MLVW with a gun behind you and trying to make a lane change to the left....I usually turn on the signal light for 10 seconds check in the mirror as best I can and then make the lane change...Hoping people are smart enough to realize that I cant see that side very well...We used to have the fish eye mirrors on the trucks but some people don't understand how to set up your mirrors so the doors wont hit them and they just end up smashed.....

I'd hate to trail a gun...

I saw that picture in the safety digest of the pickup that followed a gun too closely...scary

Haha yeah that happened on our way from the Debney Armouries in Edmonton to Commonwealth Stadium for the Queens Salute...My ML got caught at the light so the remainder of the convoy pulled over (myself and the other guy in the ML where from Red Deer and didn't know the way and they didn't put together a route map) and put on there 4 ways...Buddy didn't even slow down had to have been going 70 or 80 km/h, good thing his head wasn't 4 inchs to the right or he would have made quite a mess...

Anyone out there remember backing up a water trailer or 5k gen trailer with a 5ton by the time you saw the trailer it was too late, dueces were almost as bad.

Yup, that was fun!  ::)

I used to just disconnect and get a few guys to help push the fraking thing, it was much easier.

Anyone put a '53 footer with 60k lbs into the old Supply Depot in Montreal????  It was under an overhang and D A R K !

Don't ever believe that the longer the easier to back.

BYT Driver...Try the trailers over at the dockyards.... ... jack knife crazy...hahahaha.

alfie....I can picture the 5 tons doing that. Never done it...

I can JUST imagine that buddy must have been a shade of green when you guys went to see WTF happened. ID 10 T

Oh another peeve... public transit buses.... One try to race me once I was driving an HLVW... I think he was jelious on how big my tonka was... I won by the way... he had to make a drop off at bus stop ... hehehehe. But the guy gave me such an evil look..

Okay I wasn't racing him... it was downhill and I wanted to pass him. He was making too many drop offs for my liking.

Cheers,

Yeah I was still stuck at the lights but the 2 in that ML felt it rock a little and then got out to see what happened...Once they saw a truck under the gun the det commander told the driver to check to see if the guy was ok....(He didn't wanna see a headless man) the driver found the guy laying across the seat with his cell phone out, he wouldn't let go of his cell phone and when the Ambulance got there he refused treatment...He was sitting in one of our vans when they where waiting for the police and Ambulance and some of the troops figure he was high on something....But like the det commander said during the news interview...."How do you miss a big green army truck and gun parked on the side of the road with its 4-ways on??"....Took 6 months or so to get the gun fixed....Minor repairs...Brake handles replace and some of the shields....I think they where waiting for the courts to settle it to see if buddies insurance was paying for it....

He was being a reckless driver. So I used my powers to go around him and protect my load. Could of been an IED....
