Royal Navy's Illustrious Passes the Torch, Ends Career

LONDON — Illustrious, the second most famous commissioned warship in the Royal Navy, returned to Portsmouth naval base for the last time July 21, marking the end of a 32-year career for the helicopter carrier.

Having handed over duties as the Navy’s helicopter carrier to Ocean, the 22,000-ton Illustrious, affectionately known as Lusty, is scheduled to be officially decommissioned by the end of the year.

The carrier has clocked almost 890,000 miles and seen service in the Falkland Islands, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Iraq and elsewhere. Her final public role was to play a part in the naming ceremony of the Royal Navy’s new 65,000-ton carrier Queen Elizabeth on July 4.

First woman commander of Navy warship is sent home over 'affair with male officer' on board

Commander Sarah West, 42, took charge of HMS Portland in May 2012

While Royal Navy investigates, Cdr West, from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, can retain her position

It is not known whether the male officer is married

Cdr West recently called herself ‘single’, having been married to a former RN pilot in 1998; pair later separated

The UK will send a battle group to take part in major military training, Exercise Black Eagle, in October as part of a Nato package to reassure allies in eastern Europe. The full battle group will comprise of 1,350 personnel and more than 350 armoured and other vehicles.

Women soldiers could be issued with special sports bras as part of their kit to better protect them on active service.
Defence chiefs are considering “adequate support” for servicewomen after complaints that their rigorous duties risked damaging their breasts.

One soldier said she had spent the last two decades having to buy her own bras because official kit is not good enough.

She is also calling for the reinstatement of a “hosiery allowance” to let soldiers buy their own undergarments.

Britain has invaded all but 22 countries in the world in its long and colourful history, new research has found.


Every schoolboy used to know that at the height of the empire, almost a quarter of the atlas was coloured pink, showing the extent of British rule.


But that oft recited fact dramatically understates the remarkable global reach achieved by this country.


A new study has found that at various times the British have invaded almost 90 per cent of the countries around the globe.


The analysis of the histories of the almost 200 countries in the world found only 22 which have never experienced an invasion by the British.


Among this select group of nations are far-off destinations such as Guatemala, Tajikistan and the Marshall Islands, as well some slightly closer to home, such as Luxembourg.

The analysis is contained in a new book, All the Countries We’ve Ever Invaded: And the Few We Never Got Round To.

RAF planes to drop food aid in Iraq


British forces are to drop food aid for Iraqi refugees living under threat from militants, the defence secretary says.

Michael Fallon said the focus was supporting the US in its planned air strikes on militants but there will also be food drops, targeting members of the Yazidi community.

The drops are part of an £8m package of additional aid, which will also provide shelter, medical supplies and water.

It brings the UK government's support to displaced Iraqis to £13m.

David Cameron has welcomed US air strikes against Islamic State militants but ruled out any UK military action.
