A hospital that made an RAF sergeant move out of sight of other patients in case his uniform caused offence has been forced to apologise.


Aircraft engineer Mark Prendeville was relocated twice by hospital staff who allegedly told his family “they didn’t want to upset people” and “have lots of different cultures coming in”.


Sgt Prendeville was taken to the Accident and Emergency unit of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent after chemicals from a fire extinguisher got in to his eyes during a training exercise.


The 38-year-old, who has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, was taken first to an empty corner of the waiting room and later around a corner.

It might be perfectly understandable why Labour party delegates decided to bottle out of a conference debate on Trident, Britain’s most powerful, most expensive, most irrelevant and most useless weapon. Yet the attempt to suppress debate on the utility of Britain’s nuclear arsenal is undemocratic. And a discussion is needed, desperately.

“The question of Trident renewal becomes a symbol for Britain in the world, for patriotism, or for enlightened foreign policy,” says Michael Clarke, director general of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) thinktank. He adds: “The one thing that politicians don’t address when they talk about Britain’s nuclear weapons is how they do, or don’t, actually figure in practical defence policy for the next 10 or 20 years. It is really very depressing.”

In his memoirs, Tony Blair said of Trident: “The expense is huge and the utility … non-existent in terms of military use.” He said he could clearly see the force of the “common sense and practical argument” against Trident, but in the end he thought that giving it up would be “too big a downgrading of our status as a nation”.

And just as the US military's new JLTV is to the ageing Humvee it retires, the Ajax tank promises dramatically greater firepower, manoeuverability and survivability than its predecessor — a tank that entered service in 1971 with a 195-horsepower six-cylinder engine from Jaguar.

Neat, I'll look into this, I flirted with the idea of joining the UK army years ago. The recruiting video is pretty neat and it seems like the have a fair bit of equipment. I imagine I could eventually get dual citizenship as well? Definitely something to look into.

I strongly suggest that you look well before you leap. Pay and conditions are very, very different from the CF.

Definitely, not something to just go on a whim. Base pay seems the exact same, but I haven't really looked much further than that. Taxes and Cost of Living would be a whole other ballgame. Before I even consider how the Navy operates as well as Europe in general.  As well as what possible implications could arise when/if I return.  Website is completely different than the CF, in some ways better in some ways more complicated. In all honesty, I doubt that I'd actually follow through with it, but it is always fun to think about things.

The Canadian Navy from what I've researched, the people I've talked to and viewed  in person seems like a good go but is extremely frustrating to try and CT into.

Clearly the MOD is suffering a "good looking young lass" gap if senior officers all have to share one. Wonder if they all got the clap?
