Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Fully agree with Colin on this one. The Coast Guard usually has three or four icebreakers at a time up in the Arctic during the navigation season. They can't be everywhere help is needed. Any AOPS up there at the time will at the very least be called upon to "assist" some ships whenever they are the closest one. It won't be CG type assistance, i.e. they will not escort the ship to where they are going, but the AOPS will at the very least get them out of being stuck in the ice, and /or provide first line emergency help (for medical or damage control situations).
 
Reading the other thread about the RCN response to the Chinese vessel in the Bering Strait and the deployment of the HMCS Regina got me wondering if the AOPS will be used as Ready Duty Ships or is that something reserved for the frigates?

For sure they will be RDS. MCDV's are often RDS.

Regina wasn't RDS though ( I don't think). She was supposed to sail a week later anyways, but were moved up a week because of obvious reason.

They do the same when we are in their backyard, it's pretty common. It's only a news story sometimes but happens all the time.

indeed, but the first thing I noticed, and yes I guess I am being nitpicky, is that our colours are not clearly visible on either vessel whereas the U.S. flag is both huge and in plain sight

The American ship is flying its battle ensign, the Canadian ships aren't.

The halyards on the AOPVs kinda suck, so the ensign is hidden by the stacks/mast.
