No specific reason I know of, probably the misinformed rumour I hear all the time that the RCMP Act requires it, or perhaps a personal taste thing for that officer.
Hasn't been an issue for me yet, and I plan to try and keep that record going.
I'm under explicit orders from a senior commissioned officer in my chain to "identify yourself as a member in any interaction with Police off duty"
I've never had to deal with this, but it sits uneasy with me. My plan, should the need arise, is to state "I am required by my line officer to...
I for one truly enjoyed signing into my PC on the block that included working Christmas Eve as well as Christmas night to see some genius had sent a Division wide email telling "anybody left working on this last day before holidays" to go home and spend time with their families, meant for the HQ...
RCMP Commissioner says Force ready to facilitate end of contract policing with lessons learned from Surrey
That's a hot take given how hard they've fought to retain Surrey, to the point of ruining member's careers...
But hey, our actual reason to exist is Federal Policing and we barely do...
Mods I feel like there's enough of a tangent going here with fruitful discussion for a split, but I'll leave that to you.
A couple thoughts, now there been some more opinion sharing here:
I completely agree patrol officers should not be showing up to routine calls for service in full battle...
I've seen one set. Regrettably, still in that god awful carrier that refuses to stay put and renders the plate nearly useless by falling out of position even when sized and worn properly.
Nobody overdoes something like the RCMP when their pp gets smacked.
There are lighter plates available, but the fact of the matter is every car is supposed to have a set of plates (where I'm at they do) but members rarely wear them for any one of a variety of reasons and NCO's don't enforce it...
Risk of what?
I'm asking for a blue shirt, no bright yellow stripes on my pants, a pistol that doesn't break in my holster, and some basic PPE that's mandatory in less dangerous professions...
That's fine, but as a "beat cop" I've been:
hit in the head with a hammer (would have liked a helmet)
chased gun runners crossing into Canada at night through a mix of forested area and farmer's field with long ranges (would have liked NVG's and a IR laser on my C8)
been in an armed and...
Its certainly better than nothing, and I'll admit I'm not fully read up on how it would/will work.
I just have amazingly low expectations for anything done by the current Government (or quite frankly any follow-on Government), as a result of having read the book "Willful Blindness" by Sam...
I appreciate what you're saying here, but my primary reason for joining the RCMP was all of the stuff we do that isn't city policing, specifically Federal and Specialized Policing. The whole 158 career specializations pitch. I'm not going to get a shot at that somewhere else, at least not the...
