    Weapon allowed on plane

Gee, I've taken bagpipes as a carry-on several times, on both domestic and international flights.  They're well-renowned as an instrument of war, yet no security guard has ever stopped me.  If they fell into the wrong hands... ;D Cheers,

    The Great Gun Control Debate

You will likely have to buy them dinner, because logic means very little to the gun grabbers. On the other hand at least they won't get any fatter on tap water. Cheers

Well Done, Sir! -Ruxted On Gordon O'Connor

Ruxted's comments are apt, as are Geo's.  I thank General O'Connor for his service to Canada's defence and I hope that his successor can do even better.  I would note that his move to Revenue is hardly a demotion and I am sure that his particular skills will be useful there. Cheers, Redleafjumper

Trying to start a reserve unit

Company A of the Rocky Mountain Rangers existed in Prince George from about 1957 (might have been earlier) to 1970, when it was closed and reformed in Kamloops.  It was in an armoury located on 1st Avenue, which was damaged in a fire and later torn down for rail access.

Trying to start a reserve unit

Hi Ruez, Slowly.  A fair bit depends on if the cabinet shuffle produces a new defence minister and one that is a bit more sympathetic to this area. A present the official response is "...we'll do it if the military asks and the cost can be taken from exisiting resources...".  That is a fancy...

All You Want To Know About Bagpipes[ and then some]- Merged

I am sure you aren't the only one.  I thought that I would mention them as I know a very good piper who, as a child was given the choice of a "used" and well-loved set of Hendersons and a "new" set of Hardies.  He chose the Hardies and has often regreted that choice. It is all about how those...

All You Want To Know About Bagpipes[ and then some]- Merged

You might also take a serious look at the Naill pipes if you are looking at new ones - they have excellent tone and the Naill chanter is hghly regarded for solo play.  The plastic McCallum chanter is a very good solo or band chanter that is quite durable for travelling. Hardies are just fine for...

Trying to start a reserve unit

Here is a copy of a briefing paper prepared by the Mayor's local committee at the request of MP Jay Hill for the MND.  It is a summaryto meet space limitations so some explanation are not as thorough as might otherwise be expected.  It discusses some of the points that have be raised in recent...

Trying to start a reserve unit

Redleaf, pull a page out of PPCLI history. Offer the government a fixed amount to reestablish. The mayor of Prince George has gone as far as to offer to donate the land to build an armouries, build it and then lease it to DND. That seems pretty reasonable to me as far as an offer to get it going.

Trying to start a reserve unit

Yes, I had heard of the Halifax rifles campaign.  In a conversation I had with staff at LFRR, the same point was raised about why Prince George and not somewhere else.  The Halifax Rifle effort was mentioned and it was pointed out the the Prince George case was quite compelling for reasons...

    Suggestion?

As long as the other musicians recognize pipes as an instrument (tongue firmly embedded in cheek), I am up for a board on Military Music, Art and Poetry. I think it makes sense to combine those topics under that heading.  I have noticed a number of threads that would fit into a board of that...

Trying to start a reserve unit

As stated in earlier parts of this thread, there have been many reservists and regular force retirees who have found themselves in Prince George and started to look for the reserve unit, but guess what, there isn't one. This is an 'if you build it they will come' situation.  If the government...

Trying to start a reserve unit

Cdn aviator, I don't know why you seem intent on starting an argument, but it isn't appreciated.  Your posts have usually been much more thoughtful. To respond to your points I started this thread to seek suggestions on how to better accomplish putting a reserve presence in Prince George, BC...

Trying to start a reserve unit

Well, adding a sub-unit or more does add to the big picture.  One of the stated aims of the government is to increase a northern precense of our military.  Right now we have very little precense north of about the 52nd parallel and it is a big country.  People out of the larger southern centres...

Trying to start a reserve unit

A sub-unit of an existing unit is exactly what has been proposed.  The problem as stated earlier is that the government needs to make the political decision and allocate the resources to make it happen as no one wants to rob Peter to pay Paul.  All I can get out of this MND is that a new unit...

Trying to start a reserve unit

There are lots of people in and around Prince George who could staff a unit.  There would be some need for upgrading of older service in many cases, or a need to change cap badges, but availability of people is the least concern.  At this point it is a political decision. Cheers,

Trying to start a reserve unit

ArtyNewbie, perhaps a casual read of the thread  would  show you that the entire effort in Prince Goerge has been about forming a company of an existing unit, not a new "regiment".  To answer another question, there are three cadet corps in Prince George.  Sea Cadets, Rocky Mountain Rangers Army...
