I am working on a book of CF Flying and Specialist Skills Badges, Unification to Present, and I need some assistance. I was told that qualified Parachutists in some units, 2RCR in particular, had jump wings made in camp in Kandahar and wore them unofficially on their cadpat (pock flaps, or belts)? First of all, can anyone confirm this? Were some wings made over there? And second, does anyone have one they would like to sell? Any help would be appreciated, even a photo of the badge (if it exists) so I know what I am looking for. Thanks.

Yes, they exist; I had some made, but they are not for sale.

This is what mine look like:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

They were made in a small shop on the KAF boardwalk.

;D I had them done on my second tour... I believe you were partying at the 'versity at that time !!!  ;)

3 RCR had some made up in 08. i ain't coughing mine up. but who knows maybe you'll get lucky and someone has an extra one.

air-ops, I assume you are aware that a number of groups were making patches for their sections/units?

For example, lots of Engineers had 'sapper' or some kind of patch for their field squad, section etc. There is probably quite a lot of different patches out there from over the years.

I doubt that it was 2 RCR that had the wings made up, since they are a mechanized unit and besides the recce and snipers, not many of them would be qualified as basic parachutists, let alone paratroopers.

It is still possible to purchase wings similar to this, but not in the desert pattern.

Try this:

And I'm having doubts about your profile claim of being a MCpl in 3PPCLI.....not the Bn/Regt, the MCpl.  ::)

Given your extensive jump experience, did no one in your battalion's jump company earn wings prior to being posted in?  Does anyone there wear wings with a white leaf if not currently in a jump position?  If someone has basic para, and  ~shudder~  possibly even real Airborne experience, would they be precluded a posting to 2RCR or any other mech battalion?

Do jump-qualified people have the wings burnt off their chests when posted outside of jump positions?

Yes, these are "rhetorical questions" [I'd prefer you Google "rhetorical" than actually respond].

When I was posted to 2RCR 02-04, alot of the CO's were either ex-CAR or were parachutists, so they used to run Casual Parachute drops reasonably frequently in those years if money was available...alot of old 3 Cdo'ites were there as well as basic parachutists.

Just sayin...

And this is why a lot of people with real experience avoid this site. Considering that I am a para instructor, I think that I am in a position that enables me to have a pretty good grasp on the workings of the parachute world.

At the moment, there may be one or two people in our company who had their wings before coming to 3VP,  but considering we run in house courses, it is rare, and in senior positions.

It is also rare for someone to go from a jump position to a mech position. If you are posted, usually it is out to a school, not to another unit, unless you are a WO or up, I can explain more if you need help with that.

Thanks for your interest in my profile, and I can assure you that I am indeed who I say I am.

So there were a lot of different CO's in 2RCR between 02-04? Thats quite the turnover rate.

2...you're right, should have edited the "alot".  However, doesn't negate DZ coverages that were done.

Edited to complete the thought

~slow clap~  That's nice. Completely irrelevant, but nice.

The original poster stated "2RCR in particular, had jump wings made in camp in Kandahar," and you basically said he was lying because you apparently can't imagine Mech soldiers having jump wings.  This tells me that you haven't seen much of the CF.  There are jumpers posted everywhere; even people with Air Force and Navy uniforms have been spotted wearing jump wings  :o -- any one of whom could have had arid-pattern wings made up.  So while you may claim a "pretty good grasp on the parachute world," that obviously doesn't confer a grasp on the CF.  That's all I was saying.

Sorry I hurt your feelings there, muffin.  :'(

Again, you presume to know things about me, when you have no idea who I am, or where I have served my time. I spent 3 years in 1 RCR, and did time with the 2nd as well before coming to 3VP.

I never said he was lying, and I never said that mech soldiers wouldnt have earned jump wings. In fact I made note that many in recce and sniper would, I know this since I have put many through. However, in my overseas experience, working with units who were mechanized, I never once saw a soldier from a 1st or 2nd bn wearing jump wings on their combats, or having them ordered.

I at least made an effort to direct the OP where he could get some of the wings, what is your purpose here?

And yes, my status as a PI does factor into the relivance of this conversation. I see the people who are put through, and have seen people from all trades and elements gain their wings.

Why would you see any soldier wear jump wings on their combats?

Well, my ex spent '85 to '95 with CAR, 3 Cdo.  Then went to 2RCR.  Then went to CPC.  Then went back to 2RCR in 2003.  Two tours with the Skyhawks.  Recce, Advanced Recce, JM, PI, MFPI qualified etc etc ... Now he's at the school.  Medicineman knows him well given their history together.

I can list at least 10 names off the top of my head of boys from the CAR, 3 Cdo who served on both Apollo and Athena who resided with 2RCR at the time of their tours most of whom are still with the 2nd Battalion.  I can also name quite a few currently with the 1st Bn.

Pretty sure that I also bumped into a couple of the folks posting in this very thread during their TI in the CAR.  Funny that.

My ex certainly wears his wings surreptitiously on his cadpat; along with the Airborne Regiment button on his tunic ... nicely hidden by the sash.  If you were to look inside his beret, you'll also find his CAR capbadge nicely tucked in on the underside from The Royal Canadian Regiment capbadge.

Hmmmm, did you hang at the boardwalk in KAF all the time?  I think you missed an order that was submitted.

The OP suggested that these were for pocket flaps or belts. I consider both of these items to be dress of the day.

Isnt that nice! You must feel so special after writing that all down! I think somewhere you just earned an internet gold star, although you might have to share it with medicine man.

Apparently it is you who believes that you are the special one with your course and beacoup de TI/experience ... much of which and more some of the respondents to this very thread have in spades over you and yet you write them off.  They have been there too and walked the walk; they are quite capable of talking the talk.

How lovely for you.

Another person who presumes to know all about me! Perhaps you can list off their experience and courses as well! I am sure there is another special internet star in it for you!
