(I posted this question previously then the server went unresponsive and deleted my account. Did i say something wrong?)

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

I have been studying and training in the Traditional Martial Art of Tang Soo Do for The last seven years as of September, I have taught the art for six of those years. I truly have a passion for martial arts and would like to continue even while in the military. I would like to know to what extent this is possible.

I am inquiring in the forums to get a wider and broader spectrum of views and opinions on this particular inquiry.
I understand that during the basic training you apparently have little free time and those who I have asked in recruiting have seem to be agreement upon The idea that I won't have time to do anything but basic training. To what extent is this true? Is it not true that we get weekends to do what we like or do we even have any free time during the day? Or is it basically just Enough time to poop and shower other than studying and running? I understand that the training will be very fatiguing for most people and when answering my questions most people will take that into consideration but fatigue aside what are the time constraints?

Also for those of you who have been enlisted a while, are there many people In the military who are actually interested in or have a passion for any kind of martial arts or traditional martial arts that is hand-to-hand or artistic and philosophical in nature? This question aims to answer whether the culture in the military will be supportive of me and my desire to cultivate the arts within my life in the military.

This is very important to me because I'm not a football fan, I don't go out and drink and watch sports with buddies for fun. That's not my idea of a good time. I would much rather find people who are more interested in practicing the martial arts.

Hopefully this is enough information for me to get a wide variety of views and opinions from people on this forum. Thank you for your time.

100% true. Don't expect any time off for anything other than studying/kit/quarters/sleeping and you won't be disappointed with Basic Training. Once you're trade qualified, and posted to a unit, I'm sure you'll have all sorts of time to do Martial Arts.

During BMQ,  you will not have time to go into town and attend a class, etc during your "free" time after the training day.  On the occasional weekend off you get later on in the course,  if you aren't CB'd you may be able to - I would OK this with your course staff first though.

I don't know anyone that kept up with anything like that while they were on course or PAT Platoon/PRETC.  But once you are out of the training system and at a unit you will have the time after work and on weekends(unless you are away in the field, etc).

...and you did nothing wrong,..the site had a small hiccup today and we lost aboout 5 hours of data.

Perhaps i should clarify, i do not need time to leave the base to take martial arts classes. i am a certified instructor. what i would like to know is if i will be allowed to take one of the manuals out of storage during the weekend for instance to read up and practice either on my own or with anyone who also has the weekend. practicing on my own is fine, i have much i do allready know that can be improved, none of this requires me leaving any base.

hopefully this clears up any false assumptions. my apologies for not being clearer.

Yes, you will have some time while on course although probably not much for the first few weeks.

Suggestion: While at BMQ, shelve the ninja stuff (which you know pretty well) and focus on the army stuff (which you probably don't have a clue about), or you're likely to screw up both.

Heed our advice and you will hopefully learn by the first and second methods, and avoid the third, Grasshopper:

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest." - Confucius

If you are looking to instruct other members even during your free time on base you will need to recieve permission from the chain of command before hand. If you are wanting to read material during any free time I don't see a problem. If you are ever unsure simply put a request in through your chain of command or get the ok from your course staff first.

Based on my own time at St Jean, you will have some time after the indoc period (5 weeks?) on the weekends to read and even to practice katas (or whatever their equivilant is in "Tang Soo Do") if that is what helps you relax and unwind.

I'd forget about the "instructing" stuff for now though.

It's Korean, so poomsae.

It is basic training, my advice is to expect nothing and you won't be disappointed  :)

Most bases have some martial arts clubs; however, while you are training expect to put the martial arts on the back burner for a little while  :2c:
