DRDC has undertaken a comprehensive research program to investigate blast injuries to soldiers in order to develop better diagnostics, casualty care, therapies, and possible countermeasures. The initial focus of the program concerns blast-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI), a closed-head injury which may not exhibit overt external wounding. It has become widely accepted that exposure to blast waves can cause subtle injury to the brain which later manifests itself as TBI. While penetration and/or fragmentation injuries still remain responsible for the greatest number of battlefield fatalities, the more prominent use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and improvements in protection have shifted injury patterns to an increase in primary blast neurotrauma with symptoms including retrograde and anterograde amnesia, severe headache, tinnitus, hypersensitivity to noise, tremors, dizziness and difficulty with decision making.  A significant portion of the research at DRDC concerns the investigation of the biomechanical processes associated with TBI, resulting from exposure to blast loading using both computational and physical models, the latter consisting of shells of varying geometries, enclosing matrices of different viscoelastic properties. These shells are used to investigate the basic phenomenology of blast interaction with the head. A unique innovation of the DRDC Suffield program is the capacity to embed live ‘reporter’ cells (brain-cell aggregates) into these physical models and thereby quantify the biological outcome or injury from a particular blast exposure ...."
