"....Variation of Electro-Optic and Infrared signatures of small boats and their white-water bow wakes.

In the current climate of asymmetric warfare and piracy, the capacity to detect potentially hostile small sea boat is increasingly important. With EO/IR sensors (visible, night vision and infrared cameras), small sea boat can be detected over a range of environmental conditions. However, the detectability depends on a host of parameters, one in particular is the white-water bow wakes that are associated with fast moving small boat. Understanding the relative importance of boat and white water-wake signatures is required for developing
detection models. To that end, DRDC Atlantic conducted a trial in late May 2009 where three small boat were imaged in four EO/IR bands during day and night time conditions, for a systematic variation of range, aspect and speed. These data are required to be analyzed under this contract requirement. The objective of this work is to deduce from existing trial data the variation of boat and wake EO/IR contrast signatures over a range of parameters. A summary of the requirements is listed below.

(1) Analysis of an extensive set of image data from a recent trial to deduce:
(a)    the contrast signatures of the small boats in the four electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) bands as a function of aspect, range and boat size and type;
(b)    the contrast signatures of the white-water bow wakes in the four EO/IR bands as a function of aspect, range, boat size and type and boat speed...."

"....The Department of National Defence - Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC - Toronto), has a software requirement for the Reconfigurable Helicopter Simulator (RHS).  The Reconfigurable Helicopter Simulator is a low-cost, 6-DOF motion simulator using stereoscopic head-mounted display units to provide visuals for the pilots. The RHS is currently used as a training and research testbed in support of the Canadian Forces. Its reconfigurability allows it to simulate a variety of airframes and training scenarios; the focus of the current development is an autorotation in a light, single-engine helicopter. A highly dynamic emergency-landing manoeuvre, the autorotation requires high-fidelity visual cueing close to the ground in order for the pilot to make timely control decisions.  Binocular parallax, visual flow field, and height-above-ground cues are all critical for the final phase of the manoeuvre. The current lack of low-lying geometry and detail in the RHS visual database (in sufficient quantity to provide cues at moderate airspeed, but still allow 60Hz operation) is preventing pilots from completing the autorotation reliably...."

....on this one:  "Variation of Electro-Optic and Infrared signatures of small boats and their white-water bow wakes" (second item in post)

Globe & Mail:  "There are no silver-bullet fixes for the hijacking threat that dogs 22,000 ships each year off Somalia but the Canadian military is trying to build a pirate detector of sorts that boosts the odds of thwarting these maritime marauders.

The research arm of the Department of National Defence – a division with a $300-million budget – has been conducting trials designed to increase early detection of the tiny, high-speed boats used for pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean....."

Canadian Press:  "There’s a report the Canadian military is developing a way to detect pirate boats harassing merchant ships off the East African coast.

Pirates typically launch assaults using small boats or skiffs with low profiles that elude conventional radar, often under the cover of darkness.

The Globe and Mail is reporting on its website that the military is testing ways to detect the tiny, high-speed boats through their wake.

The Globe says the military is looking at gear like night-vision technology and infrared sensors to spot the wake, which stands out more prominently than a slower craft.

The real trick is to develop a quick way of separating the high-horsepower wake of a pirate crew from the less turbulent ones created by slower craft, like fishing boats...."
