Trump administration 2024-2028

It really is disconcerting how insignificant that is. Our response: “Just buy more Canadian ketchup!”

No doubt team america has already done the math. Wonder if the laurentians have?

Notice? Yes.

If Canada disappeared, let’s say there was a direct linear reduction of American GDP and American exports to Canada simply stopped, then the impact to America would be….a hiccup.

$352BUSD seems like a big number until until you put it beside a gigantic number…$27,361BUSD.

$0.35T - U.S. exports to Canada (ref.)

$27.36T - US GDP (ref.)

-1.28% GDP ( -0.35/27.36=0.0128)

So ‘notice’? Sure.

Be anything more than a slight inconvenience (less than 1/10th the impact of COVID-19) to the average American? Nope.
you could break it down more. The economy of the US is really just Washington, California, Massachusetts ,New York and New Jersey. The rest of the states are regularly running negative net contributors to the federal budget

Trudeau: "....more of the things that Canada is already sending them as a reliable and trustworthy partner.”

I don't think so. Not with this government which can't even govern Canada.

Trudeau: "....more of the things that Canada is already sending them as a reliable and trustworthy partner.”

I don't think so. Not with this government which can't even govern Canada.
That Trudeau can say that with a straight face, while he and his team have had possibly the most consistent of effort to reduce and limit Canada O&G exports, reinforces the Government’s lack of honesty.

That is why Trump isn't going to substantively alter his message until Canada changes governments.

After closing its Ontario processing facility in 2014, Heinz will soon make ketchup in Canada once again.

U.S. food conglomerate Kraft Heinz Co. announced in a news release Tuesday that starting next summer, it will produce 45 million kilograms of ketchup every year at a facility in Montreal.

The ketchup will be bound for consumption in Canada and will create about 30 jobs at the Mont Royal facility in Montreal.

The company said the plan will mean an investment of $17 million, part of which is being financed by a $2 million forgivable loan from the government of Quebec's business expansion program.

Trump on border security and immigration.

More than 500 illegal migrants have been arrested and deported in a mass operation just days into Donald Trump’s second term as US president, his press secretary has announced.

“The Trump administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals,” Karoline Leavitt said in a post on X, adding that “hundreds” were deported by military aircraft.

She wrote: “Today the Trump administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals including a suspected terrorist, four members of the Tren de Aragua gang, and several illegals convicted of sex crimes against minors.

Earlier in the week, the Republican-led US Congress passed a bill to expand pretrial incarceration for foreign criminal suspects.

Mr Trump plans send 10,000 troops to the country’s southern border to help repel an “invasion” of migrants attempting to cross from Mexico, according to a report.

...

Is this the standard he wants Canada to enforce to reduce the tariffs charged?

In the mean time I hope there is some back channel comms between Canada and POTUS and his ....cabinet.... (I was going to say gang) asking him to reconsider.....which he may not.

In the meantime do up your seat belts - it might be quite a ride.....

Aw, that's so cute....

You assume he cares in the slightest about what we do, and that we have any control at all over his decisions, which he likely doesn't.- and we don't.

Perhaps jurisdictionally best to stay in Quebec during processing?

Intent understood (and I can see a former Sgt Maj herding people onto the plane up saying, "here's your flight to the beach!"), but I think you may have to ... finesse the definition of "near the U.S. border in Quebec" LOL!!!!!!!!!

The contrary proposition

I reckon lots of lawyers are going to get rich on this one.

....

It is obvious there are contrary positions. There are contrary positions on the 2nd Amendment and probably a lot of others. But the best and surest was to definitively clarify these issues is to involve the Court. I don't enough about their jurisprudence to know if Congress or the Executive can advance a 'reference case' directly to the Supreme Court. Up here, proposed legislation is (supposed to be) run by DOJ for Charter compliance and the AG can put a 'reference question' to the SCOC.
DJT must have had advice drafting the EOs - they use a lot of big words. They are either confident in their position or don't care.

And so it begins:
Although it is a border-related issue, I'm not sure people leaving the US is what keeps him up at night. I'm surprised he hasn't spun the Vermont Border Patrol shooting - facts bedamned.

I wonder if ol Rachael still has a job …

As the WHO is finding out now...

WHO freezes hiring, restricts travel after US withdrawal

Trump’s planned exit “has made our financial situation more acute” the WHO chief told staff.

The World Health Organization is freezing recruitment and slashing travel in response to the withdrawal of the U.S., its biggest funder, according to an internal email seen by POLITICO.

“As you know, the United States of America has announced that it intends to withdraw from WHO. We regret this decision and hope the new administration will reconsider it,” Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told staff in an email sent Thursday night.

“This announcement has made our financial situation more acute, and we know it has created significant concern and uncertainty for the WHO workforce,” he added.
