Trudeau Popularity - or not (various polling, etc.)

My bet is that Trudeau will use this six week break to allow things to cool off, he'll do a cabinet shuffle and try a big reset. He'll use the fear of Trump, 25% tariffs, foreign interference to try and continue to paint PP as some sort of maple maga. Follow that up with more free money, universal income to try and reverse things. Too many cowards in his party, he's not going anywhere.

Freeland may be positioning herself for a leadership run.
Bad breakup out-loud letter points to that for sure. While she might get the crown (esp. if her numbers climb after screwing an BIGLY unpopular leader), she’s been too loyal to Trudeau tooooo long to be able to shed his stink. Take note on that last bit, Minister Leblanc ;)

Anyone wanting to hear historically Liberal operators diss Trudeau with Conservative & NDP operators, I highly recommend giving an hour & 20 minutes of your life to these folks…

I still fail to see what difference Trudeau leaving will have. Is a new leader going to make it more likely that I will vote Liberal?

You’d be surprised.

Lots of people might vote liberal if Trudeau is gone. I certainly can’t see myself voting for him. But that could change with different leadership and direction.

On individual voting intentions, it won't make much difference. At this point, though, Team Red commentators are talking about saving the furniture of the party at this point.

You're far more charitable than I think many voters might be. I think it would have to be a HUGELY massive different direction, well sold, to make a difference. Right this second, I'd bet my loonie with those saying it's too late to turn the grain boat around.

to me they are all tainted. If they were that interested in a different direction what was stopping them before?

the conservatives were down to two right? I am doubtful the Liberal party is in for more than a spanking for an election cycle or two

Trump has done more for Canada than any Prime Minister since Harper ....
Hope you keep saying that if/when prices rise, people get laid off, the economy slowing down & a drop in the Canadian dollar if/when 25% across-the-board tariffs hit - or will all that be Trudeau's fault? ;)

Team Red may not drop to, as some wags used to say when Team Blue got down to two, "a mating pair," but unless things change bigly and consistently, they're going to take it hard next election.

Then again, events and all that, so we'll see.

Won't make it less likely though, and there are a lot of people that want Trudeau gone but aren't a fan of PP or the current LPC direction. I'd be pretty happy with a Paul Martin type Liberal leader and matching platform.

And maybe some accountability for the billions in missing tax dollars?
Sure.
Like, it wasn't just Trudeau signing off on stuff like ArriveCan. The corruption runs pretty deep. Why give the party a free pass like that?
What pass?

My point is that if the party wants to make it close at the next election and avoid being relegated to 3rd or 4th, new leader and new direction is required. Trudeau leaving is one step in that process.

Trudeau wants to go down with the ship in October. The problem is that he is taking everyone with him in the process. His resignation gives the LPC backbenchers and party faithful enough time to get to the lifeboats.

It will also give the LPC the modus vivendi to rebrand, restructure, and come back swinging in 2029 (or so the story goes).

Personally, if the Liberals were to gut things down to the studs and rebuild on a foundation of sound, centre-left policy based on reasonable fiscal policy; I might be wooed. For now, I am nowhere near voting for Team Red if the writ gets dropped today.

I’m not sure the LPC actually thinks that they need a different policy direction. I suspect the internal thinking is more along the lines of Trudeau as a personality being the liability vs the LPC policies.
There has been minimal conversation about the policies being wrong from the LPC caucus. Most LPC MPs seem very content with their parties policy direction.

Except Freeland just countered that with what she wrote in her letter. She seemingly has positioned herself as a centrist with that. She literally disagreed with the policies and said they were wrong and got a standing ovation from a lot of caucus members.

Does it resonate? Time will tell. It did not go unnoticed though.
