"The best movie of all time"

Technoviking said:
Is that the movie formerly known as "Star Wars"?  If so, then I agree.  It was a great film (the original) with a good story line, full of excitement, etc.

I do not share the same enthusiasm for the other movies in that series.

I thought Empire Strikes Back had great dialogue. Han and Leia are pretty much my favorite screen couple of all time.

However, the franchise went downhill starting with the Ewoks.

But, seriously, what evokes more creepy imagery than this:

The only thing creepier than that image is this voice:

Edward's list is classic. Alexander Nevskii is perhaps the best propaganda movie ever (and Eisenstein's other films are classics of the genre as well).

For sheer storytelling virtuosity I nominate "The Usual Suspects", followed by "Memento".

Olivier's 1944 version of Henry V gives Alexander Nevsky a run for the best propaganda film honours, but Eisenstein does, indeed, win the prize. It (Nevesky) is a wonderful film to which innumerable other film makes paid and still pay tribute, consciously or not.

And don't forget Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will, which is a cinematic masterpiece.

From my favorite decade: The 1970's.

French Connection:

That's a 1971 Pontiac Le Mans in the subway chase. There were innocent people all over the streets and in their cars. They started in Brooklyn and ran through 26 blocks hitting 90 MPH. The subway was doing 50 MPH. They side swiped a city bus so hard the doors would not open. That scene with Hackman hitting the guy going to work and spinning into a pillar was not in the script.

His partner, Roy Scheider in "The 7-ups":

That's Bill Hickman this time driving a 1972 Pontiac Grand Ville. Scheider's Ventura does a "Jayne Mansfield" into the back of an eighteen-wheeler.
Location shooting was done in upper Manhattan, on the George Washington Bridge, and on the Palisades and Taconic parkways.

Hickman was no Sir Lawrence Olivier, but he sure could drive!

I will add the movie "To kill a Mockingbird" to the list.  I am watching the movie right now, trying to decide which version I like better, the book or the movie.

In high school, I quite enjoyed the Coles Notes.

You should read the full book, it is a lot more enjoyable than just a chapter by chapter synopsis of the novel.

I was just joking around. I did read the full book for high school English, but do not recall my impression of the book. There were several high school novel which had a big impact on me. Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison. The Old Gringo, by Carlos Fuentes. And most powerfully, George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Lawrence of Arabia

(These first two are the purest "movies" in my view as they make so much of their impact simply through images.)

E.R. Campbell: I actually saw Alexander Nevsky in the Kremlin around Christmas 1956 in a special showing for dip kids--note the Teutonic helmets in the Battle of Lake Peipus (1:48):

It was of course made before August 23, 1939.

Wasn't "Alexander Nevsky" used in "Red Storm Rising" as the film played before "the plot" that started the war?

Correct. It was one of a series of patriotic movies being aired, presumably to get the Russian people in the mood for war.

"Of all time" is so difficult. What aspects give a good movie its longevity are so varied. I watch a ton a movies and love several from every genre and time period, most of which are probably listed here. But I wanted to add "Life of Pi."  I haven't read the book, but the movie was truly spectacular.  We saw it in 3D and it's definitely up there in my 'must see' list.  Do check it out! (Although, the fact that the 3D effects were perfectly orchestrated is what made it that much more enjoyable...I'm sure on a nice, HD big-screen it's still very good.)

No particular Oder

Kelly's Heroes (reason I joined the Armour Corps, Woof Woof)

Good The Bad and The Ugly

Silverado

All the Star Wars Movies

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (uncut version)

There is just FAR too much great cinema to choose from...
However I will give you a glimpse at my soul as you've all done the same kindness..

I love period films.
I like historical films or ones loosely based on.
Films that can create at least the illusion of an immersible world are perfect.
While I don't want to be cliche and state that "I like 'war' movies" on the [unofficial] military forums.. I do like war films.

Some of my favourites are:

Gladiator;
the Hunt for Red October, Behind Enemy Lines (my father introduced me to films such as these);
the Shawshank Redemption, the Green Mile;
Zombieland, Warm Bodies soon enough;
Mad Max;
Avatar, Life of Pi;
Lord of the Rings, Star Wars(even the ewoks, not the new ones obviously), Harry Potter;
etc.

So many good movies, I probably forgot some I'd like to list!!!

This is an excellent movie, top notch.

The uncut version of Alexander is very good - check it out

I also cannot believe I forgot to list Forrest Gump!
"I'm sorry I ruined your New Year's Eve party, Lieutenant Dan. She tasted like cigarettes."

Edit for shameful misquote  :-[
