Spanish naval boats on Saturday prevented environmental activists from the group Greenpeace from boarding a ship engaged in oil exploration off the Canary Islands.
The environmental protection group accused the military of ramming its motorboats and posted a video of the operation online. The Defence Ministry in Madrid denied the accusations.
An Italian activist was injured with cuts and a broken leg, Greenpeace said.
She was hurt when she was thrown overboard and hit by an engine propeller, the Spanish news agency Efe reported. She was rescued by navy personnel.
The navy dispatched two boats to prevent the boarding of the Rowan Renaissance, sent by the oil company Repsol to conduct test drilling, Efe reported, citing the ministry.
Repsol received permission from the Spanish government for the drilling off the islands of Lanzarote und Fuerteventura, but the regional government of the Canary Islands, nearly all political parties, unions and environmental organizations oppose the plan. They fear the search for oil could negatively affect tourism, which provide the islands‘ economic livelihood.
