A 36-year-old soldier and Afghanistan veteran who had sex with three women without telling them he has herpes, infecting two, pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing bodily harm Friday.
Master Cpl. Mathew Wilson admits he had unprotected sex with two women he met on Internet dating sites and protected sex with a neighbor between 2005 and 2009.
The first woman reported that right after they had unprotected sex he asked if she knew what herpes was and said he had it. She reported Wilson became very emotional and apologized when he learned she was infected.
Wilson didn’t tell a second woman he had herpes until six weeks after they started having sex. She developed symptoms a few months later and was later diagnosed with herpes.
Both women said they wouldn’t have had sex with Wilson, who learned he has herpes in 2004, if they’d known he was infected but both continued relationships with him.
The third woman, who wasn’t infected, had a casual sexual relationship with Wilson, who said no when she asked if he had any sexually transmitted infections. She confronted him after learning he has herpes from someone else.
People with herpes are more likely to pass it on during an outbreak but the infection can be transmitted at other times, too.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 7.
Wilson faces a trial on a charge of possessing child pornography Feb. 24.
