when learning to shoot in BMQ or SQ or when they teach you, do you learn only with a scope, the info i was reading sounds that way. or do you learn first without the site? (which to me makes sense)

from my experiance in the reserves, on BMQ, SQ and BIQ and Unit training, I have only ever fired the C7 with the C79 Elcan Optical Sight. I have only ever fired with battle sights on a rifle(Carbine) with the C8 on the SATS range on my DP2A course to learn how to Zero the battle sights.

IF your reg force you will learn the irons first (as you should)

However reserve units do not hold C7's just C7A1's and so none o fthem are taught the iron sight way.

do the scope on the C7A1 not come off?

and i'm really disappointed at that.

The Elcan sight will come off, as it's mounted on the C7A1's flat top rail

so i'm confussed about the difference between the c7 and c7A1, i'm assuming the A1 is just the newest upgrade, but KevinB pointed out that on Reg forces use the C7. why?

The C7A1 is an upgrade of the C7. (There's also a newer C7A2 now)

Basically, the C7 had the rear iron sight integrated into the carrying handle, which was a part of the upper receiver. The C7A1 does not have the carrying handle, but rather a weaver rail system on the upper receiver, Like in this picture:

The reserves primarily uses the C7A1, as this is what's available to us. The C7 is older, but the regs still have access to them, whereas in the reserves we don't. The regs also now are getting the C7A2, which is what I'll be using overseas. As for where the iron sights C7 is used, someone else will have to answer that as I've only used the A1.

The C7 has the iron sights, the C7A1 has the flat top for the scope. Most Militia units no longer have the C7 in their inventory therefore if your training is being done by a Reserve unit you will learn to shoot on a C7A1.

I believe the Regular Force still uses the C7 in places like St-Jean.

is there a rear site to use just sites without the scope on the C7A1?

yes. If you're a Reservist, I don't think you'll see one, however. (No big loss - it's plastic, and i've broken two already.) There are aftermarket sights available. Don't buy them, you can't put them on your weapon. (Yeah, I've seen it tried.)

You wanna shoot iron sights? Get a PAL, buy a rifle with iron sights, and get some trigger time. I recommend going with .22 LR.

Now, since we're talking about guns 'n' stuff, you're thinking about shooting at the 300 meter target. Look at the 25 meter first.

The scope has rubber "tits" on top which can be used as battle sights.  I've used them on ranges when it was raining (I wear glasses, so I was trying to see through four sheets of glass with water running down them - front of scope, rear of scope, front of spectacle lens, rear of spectacle lens).  It actually worked fairly well - then again I had a fair bit of experience on the old FNC1A1.

The rubber tits suck - mostly they have been rubbed off field guns.

I'm not a fan of the optical sights and would prefer the iron sights any day.

I didn't say they were great - just that they were there, and somewhat better than trying to see through 4 panes of wet glass!!

And, you're right, they do wear off.

what' PAL?

we'll we are on the subject, does the army course on shooting count as the ontario safety course needed for your PAL?

NO!

The Safety course is Federally mandated.  They dont care if your ML or LE you still have to take it

what's ML, and LE stand for? sorry, don't know all the short forms yet

OOPS I meant MIL for MIL - military and LE - law enforcement
