Nobody here can....your situation WILL be different from anyone elses.

In the meantime, you can do a SEARCH and find several topics on Security Clearance, Enhanced Reliability, Requirements to join the CF, etc.

To summarize. Welcome to Army.ca, start reading.

Howdy!

I do not mean to discourage you, but I would prepare for a long wait!
I am originally from Germany , which is on the list. Did a NATO tour for the Germans in Kabul so I was hit with a Level II clearance.
I had all my paper work completed on May 24, 2008, and my file hasn't gone to booking yet, which means that the papers are still with CSIS.
By the way I hear that there is not too much going on at CSIS during the summer, vacation on so on....maybe your file will be quicker!
Good luck!!!

ok maybe i can add a bit of information in this as i'mi have been through same situtation that you are going to be going through. first of all clearance time depends on certain countries and the ability for canada to get information from them, if it's quick you'll get the enhanced reliability status quick if not well be prepared to wait. all the forms that you fill in at the start of the recruiting process for for this you'll find that out. if you have information from the police or security services in india i suggest you include that with your application it will make things some what easier.

other important things are , you will have to provide places of residence for 10 years and employment history for at least 5. if you haven't been in canada for long (ie min of 3years for citizenship) you will have to provide at least 3 possibly 4 character references who have known you for a minimum of 3 years and these must not include family these references will be interviewed. you will also need detailed information on closest family members for background checks on them also.

hope that helped some.

Thanks a ton to all for quick and informative responses - one more thing - I want to join as an in infantry officer do I need level1 or level 2 clearance - also if I decide to join as a reservist first will the clearance process be shorter.

not being in the infantry i can't tell you what clearance is required but i'll let you know from my experience rough time frames, this could be used as a guide but take in mind i came from Australia and had previous military experience and should not be a hard and fast time to what you wish to obtain.

Enhanced reliability status (ie first contact application clearance to be accepted) approximately 6 months, keep in mind i did my homework prior and gave them all the info from Australia with regards to criminal history and such and police background and fingerprint check. you could add an extra 2 months just in Australia alone chasing up information from police sources and sitting on someones desk.

Level 2 clearance: Approx 7 months after enlistment i managed to obtain this
Level 3 clearance: Over 1 year has passed from receiving level 2 and still waiting, this may not apply to you as infantry officer by you can see waiting times for someone enlisting from another country.

regardless of how long it takes if you want something you'll stick it out and do what is required it will be worth it. As for shorten period for finish of clearance for reservists i wouldn't think that it would be shorter

You will probably require a minimum of Level 2.  That is pretty much the standard for all Cbt Arms troops these days.  This means you will have to have all the data on where you have lived, worked, etc. going back 10 years.  For you residence, you must record every location you have permanently lived, with no gaps in dates.  You will need all the birthdates, places of birth, current employment, current residence, etc. of all your immediate family.  You will require 3 References who are not family members.

Time now to start collecting that info.

The Clearance will be processed when it will be processed.  Being Regular or Reserve will make no difference.  Where you have lived may have an effect on the length of time it takes to get a Clearance.  Whether or not you are deploying or require the Clearance in your employment (CF) may also have an effect on the length of time it takes.

ONCE AGAIN, if you do a SEARCH, those questions have been asked and answered.
