RMC Alumni Association Presentation to Annual General Meeting Oct 2024

Probably don't need to read it yo know it says that total world destruction will happen if RMC closes...🤪

Which is a great example of a result of confirmation bias... the bane of all well intentioned audits ;)

Signs of Confirmation Bias

When it comes to confirmation bias, there are often signs that a person is inadvertently or consciously falling victim to it.3 Unfortunately, it can also be very subtle and difficult to spot. Some of these signs that might help you identify when you or someone else is experiencing this bias include:

  • Only seeking out information that confirms your beliefs and ignoring or discredit information that doesn't support them.
  • Looking for evidence that confirms what you already think is true, rather than considering all of the evidence available.
  • Relying on stereotypes or personal biases when assessing information.
  • Selectively remembering information that supports your views while forgetting or discounting information that doesn't.
  • Having a strong emotional reaction to information (positive or negative) that confirms your beliefs, while remaining relatively unaffected by information that doesn't.

I like how they only asked alumni what they thought, and didn't bother to compare actual performance on RMC grads to other entry programs.

ROTP is much cheaper, and all the data I've seen has shown no real difference on things like success at meeting OFP or other objective measures. The GOFO data is pretty skewed given how much influcence who you know plays into it and the ring knocker club is a real thing (as well is just outlasting other people).

In the Ex Summary:
However, this conclusion rests on another assumption: that there is, prima facie, inherent value in the Canadian Military Colleges. The Board did not take this for granted; we dedicated significant time and energy to identifying and evaluating the value proposition of the Colleges. The results of these efforts led us to conclude that the Military Colleges are indeed critical national institutions of significant import to Canada, that play a distinctive role in advancing the defence and security interests of our country. They are unique establishments that cannot be replicated by civilian universities or other military units within the Canadian Armed Forces. They should be sources of pride for Canadians and should reflect Canada’s ability to project national power. As currently organized and run, however, they have failed to demonstrate a distinct value proposition, to prove their value in relation to escalating costs or to assert their relevance vis-à-vis the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces or the country.

That is clear, blunt and direct. I commend whoever wrote that.

As an ex-cadet, I am agnostic on the future of RMC. It should live or die based on its merits.

I think we can call this a 'shot across the bow'.

Clearly the board did not take their task seriously; I saw not one mention of restoration of peacocks to the CMCs.

Those are only at the one CMC that evolved and moved on from the ways of the 1800s.
