Just surfing around the DIN, and came across a document outlining the Direction LFCA is taking for the next few years. And what do I notice is that there are plans for an Op Palladium Roto 19! to be headed by the RCD. Looks like we are not leaving just yet. It also mentions Op Athena Roto 3 if the mandate is extended.

Typical politics. Talk out of your *** when the camera is in front of you, but then do the absolute opposite. The new defense minister said Canadian troops would be given a 1 year rest period, to regroup and recouperate from the constant missions and deployments in the past decade or so. Now they backpedal and are planning to send troops to Bosnia for another Roto and to Afghanistan for a 3rd Roto. And of course, the politicians win. All the news networks in Canada carried the story of the Canadian troops not being deployed for a one year period, very few, if any, will report that the defense minister went back on his word and backstabbed the whole armed forces. So the public gets a false impression, the politicians score cheap political points and the Canadian forces lose out. Deja vu all over again!

Umm the Op Athena Roto 3 was not definite, it said "if the mandate is extended". My guess is they have to plan for it just in case the mandate is extended. My rule never ever trust a Lieberal (or Fiberal whichever you wish)

from what it says on a few pictures on combat camera, roto 13(bosnia) which ends at the end of the month, the 750 soldiers from the RCD‘s who are returning home, will be replaced by a 200 member recce squadron. i dont think there intention was to completely pull out of bosnia, but to drasticly downsize the amount of personnel stationed there.

"The 750 troops of the battle group (the sharp end of Op Palladium, Roto 13) will be home by the end of March, 2004, replaced by a reconnaissance squadron group of fewer than 200 soldiers."

That‘s the pointy end of the stick troops...there will still be a support and command element that will be about 300-400 troops at last count.

As for Afganistan...don‘t believe the papers, they are completly out to lunch.

Hate to say "I told you so" but.... ;)

Regards

Oh Darn! Looks like I‘ll miss that one too!

These things are planned for well in advance, and are "subject to change". Just because it is planned, does not mean that it will happen.

I am aware of that, I just didn‘t think like most people we would still be there in 2006.
