THE Australian Navy will try to boost its numbers through a hip new ad campaign featuring original Australian music.
The Navy announced today that it is launching an online competition for local musicians to have their song feature in a new recruitment advertising campaign to start early next year.
The competition, through MySpace, will be judged by industry experts including rock aficionado James Young and Carl Gardiner from Mushroom Marketing.
Navy Personnel Policy director Mark Hill said they wanted a song that could highlight the "positive and rewarding" aspects of being part of the navy.
"It offers a huge range of exciting careers, world class training and a lifestyle and culture that is both challenging and supportive," Capt Hill said.
Former Australian Idol contestant and Navy man Carl Risely has put his support behind the competition.
"The Navy Song Battle is close to my heart," he said.
"We are calling on Australian musicians to save us from the tired association with the Village People's In the Navy.
"The winning song will be a modern anthem to inspire my Navy colleagues, celebrate their courage and dedication and pay tribute to the vital role they play both in Australia and internationally."
With the advert to be broadcast nationally on radio and television, Young said it was a great opportunity for an artist.
"There has been a quantum shift in the way bands and musicians are getting their break into the mainstream," he said.
"The Navy Song Battle is tapping into this new wave and is offering a rare chance at the big time."
The competition opens today and ends on October 27.
