Naval Warfare Officer Pin - NCM Version

CAF NCM uniforms already have trade qualification badges, unlike the Americans. They're just located on the sleeve instead of on the chest.
Yeah... I'm aware that we have trade badges on the uniform we wear the least. I've been wearing one for the last couple of decades...

Apart from the CA, it's the same badge regardless of your DP/QL. Why is a DP1 Cook wearing the same badge as a DP3? What harm is there in showing your qualification level, alongside your qualification?

Why don't we wear trade badges on our operational dress? In flash gear it would be nice to know if the S1 standing in front of me is a MMT or a Mar Tech.

For the Navy, they’re on the lapel of the tunic, and sleeve on the short sleeve shirt.
Trade badges are only on the sleeves of MS and below.

Sounds like an idea to push up to the…dress committee or something?

I’d say “Vector Check equivalent” but the RCN doesn’t have that.

I've seen other navies, instead of a ship-wide morale patch, will make a morale patch for each trade. They say it creates cohesiveness within the section, but I think it'd also serve the purpose you mention.

Something I'll consider when I get back from sailing in a PO 2 billet as a CPO 2 because we are so short staffed... 😉

I would have thought jump wings was more like boarding party or dive team, which is something open to pretty much anyone, so some random people have it.

The moustache pin is weird, as it's very Mars specific, and the BWK in particular is odd as it's a hard requirement for DP1. It would be a bit like an NTO getting a pin for finishing NEI, another for HOD qual (post AHOD) then a final version for the MSEO/CSEO tour. That's just dumb, and any NTO suggesting that would be brutally nerd mocked with fake pins being made up for them (possibly with 3D printers because we're weird and with access to devices).

I just really don't get it, and it seems like the flailing attempt by a previous CRCN to accomplish just one thing (even if that thing is stupid).
I don't even think it's weird. If it was weird we would be the only ones doing it but we aren't, every other Navy does it as well.

You know what's weird: Berets and Pips & Crowns on an Admiral 😄

Well done the USMC LG, she’s rocking the ‘Rouleau Roll!’ 👍🏼

ps. I think our Food are just wearing regular GOFO rank…the swords are std.

Maybe, but their pin doesn't look like a steaming pile of plated zinc, and they also don't have engineers and logOs, so they have non-SWO shaming for people on a dry list.

If someone doesn't get their BWK, they don't hit OFP and get punted. If someone doesn't get their command qual they get dry listed, and honestly a lot of them seem really happy about it with sweet posting options and outcans.

Hilariously some of the people that have the gold moustache got fired and/or charged, so less cachet then you might think. It's also redundant, as ex ship COs are like crossfitters and vegans. "when I commanded such and such a ship..." :giggle:

(I'd brag about too)

They dont ?

Could be wrong, my impression was their logOs were mostly shore based, and the equivalent to HODs was a line officer position on a lot of their ships that mostly did divisional type admin. Maybe that was just for the engineering side?

Was weird doing a visit to one of their ships, and realizing my theoretical counterpart on the EO side knew SFA and was a mars bar doing a rotation through, so just asked the Chief. They also seemed surprised that we were actual engineers, as they were initially giving very dumbed down answers. The EO seemed to do more on the DCO side of things, but relied completely on their senior techs for all SME (and also had a much brawnier FF/DC response from dedicated specialists). Would have liked to have done a crosspol to see how that works at sea, but never got the chance.

Their model makes sense for them, but requires way more specialization and sole role people so much bigger crew. We went the other way and now everyone is a bit of a generalist. Which is fine, as long as you don't make tactical decisions or assumptions based on the more specialized trainining and greater experience we used to have that no longer exists. For something like CSC with a much smaller core crew that's a big deal, particularly when our trades don't line up with the RN in terms of skillsets or experience.

VAdm Tyson would probably take exception to being called a Jarhead.
My bad on the misidentification on VADM Tyson, although I don’t think she’d be of the I’m not a damned ‘jarhead’ type. Some women ‘jarheads’ are also reasonably accomplished…

Is that belt authorized though?
Which one? The one with the RCN badge is sold at the canex as an authorized one with the uniform. A plain black leather belt is also authorized with the NCDs IAW the dress manual.

I would always recommend folks on board wear a belt that doesn't melt with the FR uniform, but pretty much zero risk of CRCN doing rapid response so whatever.

When I earned my “hard sea” cap badge I thought that was the big deal. That was our NCM moustache 🤷‍♀️

Except everyone from Stoker to Steward wore them... The point of the "mustaches" is to not only differentiate between occupation, but also qualification level.

If the best argument against them is "we didn't do it before", then it's likely not a bad idea. Even if implemented poorly in the case of the NWO version...

Clearly it's a way for all the shy and retiring NWOs to let you know they are in fact NWOs and not mere maritime engineers.
