Hello,

I understand that NWOs can receive a pin after completion of qualifications at sea, and wear it as a specialist skill badge. Is there an equivalent of such pin for NCMs? Looking at our friends at the U.S. Navy, they have the Surface Warfare Insignia in both officer and enlisted versions.

OK... here we go...

I think that if something was created and ordered to be worn for the NCM corps, it would be a toss up as to who would actually wear it. As an example, I know folks who have bronze, silver, and gold SSIs who don't wear them on their uniform all the time, even though by the letter of the regs, they should be.

I also believe that the things we adorn ourselves with may become less special if there are more than necessary. IMHO, the medals on my chest on Remembrance Day serve as a stark reminder of the things I have done in service of my country, but they also stand for the steadfast support I've had from my family to be ABLE to do those things.

Adding a bunch of "qualification" badges for a sordid amount of what should qualify as either part of your trade or secondary duties just seems like a lot of overkill, and again IMHO, detracts from what the uniform should stand for: The CAF uniform (whichever element) should stand for those who would give it all to make sure the rest can enjoy the freedoms they currently enjoy.

That's just my 2 cents, though.

No, the moustache pin is for getting NWO specific benchmarks. (BWK ticket, Command qualified, CO posting)

All the non-NWO officers make fun of them though so you aren't missing anything.

Occupational qualification badges already exist for NCM trades. Most officer trades have no such badges/pins... aside from the air force, and now NWOs.

The navy also has several specialist skill badges, such as submariner, port inspection diver, and clearance diver. This is in addition to the Sea Service Insignia... you want another pin, to denote qualification in one's trade, when such qualification is already displayed on the qualification badge?

It's the Navy's attempt to create an equivalent of Jump Wings... not particularly useful; rather, it's so everyone knows that we aren't LEGS and have something to FLEX on everyone else with.

😄😄😄

Sort of. The Air Force’s wings and badges only come in one version - the “you’re a qualified X” version.

The USAF has three grades of those badges (X, Senior X, Command or Master X) based on hours and quals.

E.g. a Pilot, Senior Pilot, and Command Pilot (“Master” instead of “Command” for non-pilot trades)

I would have thought jump wings was more like boarding party or dive team, which is something open to pretty much anyone, so some random people have it.

The moustache pin is weird, as it's very Mars specific, and the BWK in particular is odd as it's a hard requirement for DP1. It would be a bit like an NTO getting a pin for finishing NEI, another for HOD qual (post AHOD) then a final version for the MSEO/CSEO tour. That's just dumb, and any NTO suggesting that would be brutally nerd mocked with fake pins being made up for them (possibly with 3D printers because we're weird and with access to devices).

I just really don't get it, and it seems like the flailing attempt by a previous CRCN to accomplish just one thing (even if that thing is stupid).

That could be entertaining - colour on pilot wings that depends on the number of flight hours.

Or - better - tie IPCs to flight hours, so a Capt with 6K hours gets paid more than a LCol with 2K...

I think it’s more a matter of “hey, the USN does it (and the RN to a certain extent)”

Maybe, but their pin doesn't look like a steaming pile of plated zinc, and they also don't have engineers and logOs, so they have non-SWO shaming for people on a dry list.

If someone doesn't get their BWK, they don't hit OFP and get punted. If someone doesn't get their command qual they get dry listed, and honestly a lot of them seem really happy about it with sweet posting options and outcans.

Hilariously some of the people that have the gold moustache got fired and/or charged, so less cachet then you might think. It's also redundant, as ex ship COs are like crossfitters and vegans. "when I commanded such and such a ship..." :giggle:

(I'd brag about too)

This is the correct reply. Thanks for such a well written response.

I just got my badge sewn on my new NEU's today. And yah, I was irritated that I had to go through the admin of getting it put on (seeing that I'm an engineer now).

Settle down now... How can we feel superior about not granting badges and medals if people other than Americans do it?
It was honestly created for two reasons, 1) to equivalize us with allies, not an uncommon decision amoung world militarys and 2) pet project by previous admiral for I can only assume ego reasons justified by point 1

The Americans and others also grant "moustaches" for NCM jobs as well... God forbid Canada give people a bit more "bling" for their DEUs though.

It starts with rank badges, then grows to name tags, and before you know it the filth will want trade badges and qualifications on their uniforms... They should understand that because people before weren't recognized for training or qualification level, they shouldn't be either.

It's what makes us better than Americans, with their boy scout/NASCAR uniforms.

CAF NCM uniforms already have trade qualification badges, unlike the Americans. They're just located on the sleeve instead of on the chest.

For the Navy, they’re on the lapel of the tunic, and sleeve on the short sleeve shirt.

Ironically, they don’t have trade badges on the operational uniform…the one they wear most of the time.
