LPC leadership race - 2025

Cuts to the American federal service dont gut the Canadian economy.

I’m commenting in broad terms. Whether it’s DOGE, or pressure to Canada, etc.

PP’s speech at the Canada First rally is probably the best speech made by any politician in recent history.
It started fine. Then it fizzled into his usual attack dog mode. But otherwise was good.

Tariff for tariff dollar to dollar response to Trump. Also him giving Americans two options was good. Either work with us or against us and weaken themselves in the process.

good things that probably annoyed maple maga. Glad to see he is not a fan of Trump and lashed out calling what he is doing an unprovoked attack on Canada.

Surprised to see he would increase spending on bilingualism. I’m sure that stings some people.

Not sure about his CFB Iqaluit plan. Not so much the base plan itself but saying he’d base F35s and Poseidon’s up there. Is that something feasible?

Sadly he looks like had a smaller crowd than I thought all things considered but with the long weekend and the weather incoming that is to be expected.

Does this reset his own campaign? We’ll see.

did he mention 2 Polar icebreakers for the RCN again?

An "existential threat to our sovereignty" would be the US setting up bases and settlements on land and in waters we claim, and us not being able to do anything about it.
No. When the head of a foreign country, the most powerful in the world no less, says that your country should become part of their's, that's a threat to your sovereignty. You can't ignore it and simply wave it away as bluster, Neville.

Given the Winter Storm Warning for Ottawa, it's not unsurprising that some people stayed home.

I suspect that most Anglophones are less angry about bilingualism, and more angry that it's being used to exclude them, while successive governments since the 80s have made zero actual progress in expanding French in Canada. If you weren't born/raised in a bilingual place(most Canadians), you're well behind the people born by chance in places like Montreal or Ottawa and their surrounding environs. Making quality French training available via government channels in places like Murray Harbour, Airdrie, Dawson City, and Rankin Inlet is a worthwhile endeavor.

There is a lot of really weird things labeled as ITAR, and trying to get them removed from that list can be an effort in futility. There are a lot of random fastners, that you can buy from Home depot that got labeled as ITAR because they are used on securing a whizbang cabinet somewhere.

The actual solution ended up being changing the drawing from the NSN part to a locally procured nut and bolt that met the tech specs, which is stupid (and unecessarily painful as well).

Our CG people are a bit nuts as well, and like to try and put everything that is 'dual use' as CG. Wasted a few months of my life getting the designation removed from a diesel engine on the MCDVs, (which is a non-combatant built to commercial standards) and finally ended when I sent them an ebay listing from the engine that was avaialble after it was taken off a train or something. It's gotten better as we've started to use more COTs items and use commercial equipment (with a CAF paintjob and some add ons) but tabernak it's frustrating.
I was involved in an ITAR audit as part of Annapolis’ disposal. This was a few years after Kootenay was sold with the ASROC manuals still onboard so there was a measure of hyper awareness that boarded on the ludicrous. In my case, it was removing o-rings from the boiler room glands condenser and the removing the smoke mirrors. The former were left alone and I just smashed the mirrors. 😀

I'm not sure which head you have in mind, but my attention is on Trump. He did, does, and will talk a lot of ridiculous risible sh!t that is barely worth paying attention to, and even then only to figure out what else the distraction might be relegating to second page status. That doesn't make it 1938 in North America.

No, but it may be 1931.

You guys should listen to Rachel Maddow’s podcast - ultra I think it’s called. Nazi ideology was bigger than we think in the 30s in the USA

Authoritarianism always appeals to a surprising number of people as long as it also tries to speak to them. Demagogues know this. They know to make sure there’s a solid base of people who won’t fear the authority being used against them, and who are conditioned and taught to villify the others against whom it will be used. There’s always a core group of people who, thus treated, will tolerate pretty much anything as long as it’s brought in incrementally.

I assume you jest.
Trump is very fascistic. But perhaps not a fascist yet. That said, given the Gaza ethnic cleansing comments and his very recent tweet about how it's not illegal to break the law to save your country, I suspect something big is coming down the pipe soon.

Attached is a warning signs of fascism list. The current US government is hitting 11 or so out of 14. That's cause for worry.

Look at all the people (real and….you know, AI-generated) supporting King Carney - impressive crowds!

Edit to add: This is a close up of the “cell phone of the woman in front at 6:00” showing nobody behind Carney, just two big TVs on the back wall….as opposed to the throng of mutant AI clapping seals in the main X photo immediately below…
