True. It isn’t. As long as he opts to take a seat in a by election as is customary. Why? October is not far away. Is 7 months a big deal?

is it customary to hold a by election when 6 months later the PM is going to be contesting anyway? Seems like a waste of time to meTrue. It isn’t. As long as he opts to take a seat in a by election as is customary.
No clue. But by elections are still a thing that the PM can do.is it customary to hold a by election when 6 months later the PM is going to be contesting anyway? Seems like a waste of time to me
They are. Its not fine IMO nor is it fine for Senate seats to remain vacant but it is done all the timeNo clue. But by elections are still a thing that the PM can do.
Are ridings not entitled to representation? If someone were to step down would it be fine to leave that seat vacant for 6 months?
Guessing that an election will be called in the next 10 days.I say again, Halifax has an open riding for the LPC with Andy Filmore stepping down.
Edmonton or Fort Smith?Guessing that an election will be called in the next 10 days.
Also guessing he’ll run in his hometown.
My wager is on Fort Smith since the incumbent is leavingEdmonton or Fort Smith?
Hm, I hadn’t looked before, but the NWT seat has gone Liberal for the last three elections. But it would be a gamble- local ties matter in the North. He was born there but hasn’t been living or involved there. Anyway, I’m sure Liberal strategists are working this one. I kinda figure they’ll pick a rock solid safe seat for him so he can focus on the national campaign. My wager is on Fort Smith since the incumbent is leaving
London or Dublin likely.Edmonton or Fort Smith?

Drinking Salt water does a lot to the brain…Must be the water.
Halifax has been vacant so long it has a mandatory by-election, which was announced on March 2, to be held on April 14.is it customary to hold a by election when 6 months later the PM is going to be contesting anyway? Seems like a waste of time to me
too short a time period for the federal election i think. Minimum campaign is 37 days?Halifax has been vacant so long it has a mandatory by-election, which was announced on March 2, to be held on April 14.
If a general election is called, the by election is cancelled and they’ll vote when the rest of us do.too short a time period for the federal election i think. Minimum campaign is 37 days?
interestingly Wikipedia says thisIf a general election is called, the by election is cancelled and they’ll vote when the rest of us do.
You might be right. I’m quite confident he’s about to call an election anyway, so it’ll be moot.interestingly Wikipedia says this
Under the Parliament of Canada Act, no byelection is held if the vacancy occurs within 9 months of the fixed date for the next general election.[2] The following seats became vacant in the nine-month period prior to the fixed election date of October 20, 2025 and will remain vacant until the next general election:
The writ for a by-election must be dropped no sooner than 11 days and no later than 180 days after the chief electoral officer is officially notified of a vacancy via a warrant issued by the Speaker. Under the Canada Elections Act, by-elections must be held on a Monday, at least 36 days after dropping the writ and no more than 50 days after dropping the writ.[14]
- Honoré-Mercier, following the resignation of Independent MP Pablo Rodriguez on January 20, 2025.
- Esquimalt—Saanich—Sooke, following the resignation of New Democratic MP Randall Garrison on January 30, 2025.
