I am considering joining the navy and have a few questions

There are a fair number of regular force navy positions in Ottawa but for the most part they fall into the category of

1. RMS Clerk

2. Senior NCO's

3. Officers Lt(N) and up.

outside of those 3 is a small amount of others.

What this boils down to is that odds are extremely in favour of you ending up on one of the coasts starting out.

Can you have a life in the Navy?

Yes, somewhat....In the last 3 years, I have almost a solid year of time at sea. That does not include port visits and courses.

If you don't want to be gone alot, then do not go into a hard sea trade.

Looking for some "Int" folks...My current combat arms trade has gone somewhat stale for me, and over the last few months I have been mulling over a possible OT.  Where as I realize that I would go back down to Cpl / Seaman(?) and a drop in pay, I would rather do that than remain bored and fed up in my current trade.  My question is about the Boswain trade.  I would like to hear from any pers in the trade or any trade for that matter, with their personal insight into the trade, Navy life in general and if any of you think that going from a Sgt in the Arty to the Navy is just plain stupid. Constructive criticism welome, personal attacks are fine, just be prepared to get some back

You'll probably get offered LS IPC 4 as your offer. You'll get PLQ credit and have to start out on your basic trades course. Keep in mind you'll have to do things such as cleaning stations where you'll be on your hands and knees scrubbing decks while someone 10 years younger is telling you that you're not doing it good enough. When posted to a ship you'll get sea pay.
That being said its all pensionable time and you'll get to meet great people and see interesting places. If your in a rut, the navy is the place to be.

I hear you regarding the the whole cleaning/swabbing thing, though I accept that as part of the deal.  I think that would be the case for an OT no matter what trade in the CF.  All I would hope for would be shown some sort of respect but hey, it will be what it will be.  having done multiple tours, I would be interested in the Boarding party course once established in my trade, and also the Ships Team Diver course.  Is there an age limit to that course or as long as you are in excellent shape you are able to apply?

Bosn's and boardings go hand in hand. A lot of the skills you bring over are taught on the boarding party course as well. I don't think there is a age limit of the diving course, just as long as you're fit. If you did any demo training that's a plus too since the bosn's do that as part of their coursing as well.

Sadly, no demo trg...most of that stuff is handled for us by Ammo Techs IRT blinds/duds etc, so that would be new and interesting for me!  As far as posting preferences go, in the Army you get asked your posting preference before you are posted but obviously are sent where most required.  is this the same in the Navy regarding type of Ship or which coast you would prefer?  Also, what would your recommendation be, Halifax of Esquimault?

You go where they send you but you can ask for a particular coast, both coasts have their advantages and disadvantages and their is much written on this topic on this board. I like Halifax because its close to my family and housing costs are pretty good.

There are many good trades in the Navy.  It just depends upon what you like to do.  If you like working outside at times, Bos'n could be for you indeed.  To steal from the Keith's advertising, "Those who like it, like it a lot."  And the reverse is true too.  I know plenty of folks from both sides of that equation.

Of course, being a HT, I am biased towards my trade.  But in the end it is three hots and a cot, plus beer too.
