Canadian navy frigate back in Halifax after dual mission overseas
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
HALIFAX, N.S. - The crew of a Canadian navy ship has returned home for the holidays after a mission that included helping to secure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Somalia.
HMCS Ville de Quebec arrived in Halifax harbour Sunday after a deployment that began in July in the Mediterranean Sea, on patrol in the war against terrorism.
The frigate's mission changed in August, when it was called upon to escort civilian vessels carrying food from Kenya to Somalia through waters notorious for piracy.
The ships' commanding officer, Cmdr. Chris Dickinson, says the escorts for the UN-led aid program ensured enough food arrived in Somalia to feed 180,000 people for a year.
He said that during the deployment, most of the crew were awarded two separate medals - for work with the World Food Program and the NATO effort against terror.
They have also received a Canadian Forces Unit Commendation.
