Monks brewed a specific type of beer for consumption during lent but felt bad because it tasted so good, so they brought some to the Pope to see if he thought it enough of a sacrifice for lent. Short summary: beer spoiled en route, pope approved as he thought the spoiled beer tasted terrible. Sneaky Germans!
