Global Warming/Climate Change Super Thread

I wonder if this snow will melt before next winter?

Reflected sunlight and the latent heat of ice will reduce the temperature of the environment in the mountains meaning it will take longer for the snow to melt.

All part of the climate change crisis!

That's helpful if it has the effect of allocating the accumulated water supply more consistently.

One of the interesting points of investigation is what it actually took to create the great ice-sheets. It is known that there is a time when they were. There was also a time when they weren't. That means that they disappeared. It also means that there were times when they appeared. What gives birth to an ice age?

I don't think the IPCC has fully wrapped their heads around that yet.

PS - if I understand the cyclical theory of changes then I think we are past due for a reglaciation.

Welcome to the Holocene .... only the latest of many Inter-glacial epochs ;)

"The most recent glacial period occurred between about 120,000 and 11,500 years ago. Since then, Earth has been in an interglacial period called the Holocene. Glacial periods are colder, dustier, and generally drier than interglacial periods. These glacial–interglacial cycles are apparent in many marine and terrestrial paleoclimate records from around the world."

Yeah, I just had to replace my furnace. There is no way that rebate will pay for that, or the fuel in our two fuel efficient cars.

The actions of 42million people will not offset, in anyway, what the other 8 BILLION do.
We’re not the only country to have carbon tax, offsets, or pricing.

If all the other kids jumped off a cliff, would you?
If we were the only country doing it, maybe that would give pause. But I guess those countries are also all wrong.

In your situation, if all countries did it then at least some of them weren’t just following the leader. We can barely get everyone to agree on anything - if they did, it would be a goddamn miracle.

So, if something is “too hard” because not enough people are doing it, does it mean we shouldn’t do it either?

To use another analogy, should we not bother with trying to stop crimes because there will always be crime anyway?

So we’re not the only country thats run by a bunch of idiots who think they can control global weather through taxes. Got it.

Sadly not many countries, especially the largest carbon emitters like China, have a tax (or other disincentives) for carbon.

There isn't alot of discussion about some of the challenges with carbon taxes either, which is par for the course these days, sadly...

What a carbon tax can do and why it cannot do it all

“The carbon tax on fuel aims to restructure economies by raising the cost of a critical resource- the juice that makes them run. But restructuring takes time as people, capital and other resources do not flow seamlessly into new sectors.”

I am currently in Spain and some of the rules here make the Canadian ones look like child’s play lol.

low emission zones, car bans and extra taxes on anything not electric a moped/scooter or bus. They also have target dates to stop selling combustible engine vehicles but have gone further with a target date that will outright ban them.
