Hi. My name is Lisa, I am on the EOD/EDF team here in Trenton.

Well we got a call the other day and it was a mortor/art round of some kind. Some guy was renovating his aunts house and it was in the basement. It had a precussion/timer fuze on it and it had holes around the top (that to me look like vent holes. the item was 3" in diameter. I have more information on it, and what I was wondering is if there was anybody out here LAND BASED that has ordinance experience from maybe 30 years ago. One of the guys I work with thinks it is shrapnel, however everything I have found points to either chemicle or smoke (which would explain the holes)

Thanks for any help

Lisa

No not here at home. I have tried looking in the ORDATA, and the C-series. but even the fuze is not in there. The fuze is a No.63 fuze. I was thinking if I can find the fuze anywhere I will be able to research what possible items it was used on and narrow it down from there.
are you a specialist? if you are I would be OK with getting a picture to ya, the problem is it does not really have any visible characteristics. It looks like your average 12lb. The driving band also indicates that it has been fired (6 rifling marks along the driving band) around the top where it tapers are about 5 or six holes and there are also what appears to be rivits.

I work with a guy here in Petawawa who will probobly know it.  You ammo guys probobly know to whom I am referring to.  Send me a pic at work.  I'll pm you my address.  You'll probobly have an answer by Wednesday afternoon.

Cheers!

Awesome. Thanks. I will send you one tomorrow.

PS I am not an ammo tech, I am an AVN tech. I know not as exciting as one might think. But in the armament section I am allowed to utilize my HA&HB qualifications ;D
And get Spec pay to boot.

Cheers
Lisa

If it is a No 63 Fuze it is a very old round.  The Fuze Time and Percussion No 63 was introduced in 1904.  In 1913 all stocks were converted into No 65s and the fuze was decleared obsolete in 1922.  I can check at work and see what it was used on today.
I'm not at a location where there is DIN access so if you could send me a pic through the email address in my profile it would help.
Also is it mortar or artillery?

Edit- Could you PM me your DIN address so I can send any info to your work?  Thanks.

OK I have pictures but how do I send them or post them?

I can't do it from work because they have already decided on what it is.
I do not believe they have exercised due diligence, but do not want to step on desk pilots feet. LOL

Click on a members name, for example EOD4LIFE
That will take you to the members profile, you can then find their email and use it as normal.
Alternatively, you can send a PM (Private Message) by clicking the little speach bubble under your profile name.  The fact you got one will be indicated when you log in with a little, You have xx message, xx are new at the top of the screen.  Also the line at the top where it says My Messages, will have (1) or whatever number you have to show you have unread "mail".

I know some of the MEOD types here in Halifax, they're pretty good at what they do.  Helped ID and dispose of a WWII 2" Brit mortar round we found in a gent's attic in the spring.

Drop me a note if you'd like contact info.

Stumbled across this thread by accident, and if I may suggest something:

Try the JSEOD Operations Centre of the UK Armed Forces. It may be something they have come across at some time, considering the age of the item.

PM me for contact details.
