Hey guys, I tried searching this in the search engine and I dont think I saw any decent results, so I'm gonna assume this hasn't been posted yet.

Are soldiers in the Army allowed to use scopes other than the ELCAN, or is that the only one that is regulated? If it is allowed, then would this also apply to Reserve Infantry units? And if so, does anyone from the Royal Westminster Regiment know if they allow use of a scope other than the ELCAN? Thanks guys, I've always been curious abou this.

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere  :)

BigLou, slow down, you're only 15.

Even if you get an answer today, it can change a number of times before you put on a uniform.

Wait, and by the time you have finished your Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) and Basic Infantry Training (DP1 Inf), during which you will not be allowed to use personally acquired kit, you will have a good idea of what is being allowed in your home unit at that time.

I had an EOTech 552 sight on my C8A3 overseas, but it came that way from wherever the weapon farm is that grows them for the CF. In a Res unit, you'll be using an ELCAN. Be thankful that you're thinking of joining a combat arms unit, which most likely will have the C7A2.... I know of at least one unit that just joined the army still using the C7A1s.

I went into my tour in Iraq with the stock standard 1.5X 'tube' optics generic to the F88 FOW. A couple of months into my tour a mate from Texas sent me an EOTECH as a gift. So I used that for the remainder of my tour.

Rather than use the 'panic' sights on top of the F88 optics, the EOTECH was much better, as whichever angle I viewed the sighting picture from, the bullet went.  While wearing a CVC, EPS protective goggles and silly boom mike, normal optics would often be less effective as they could not be viewed. The EOTECH won hands down every mission.

On my tour, there were many optics. These included 'issue' EOTECHs, US M68s, ACOGs, the Cdn C79 (marketed as 'Wildcats' in Australia), plus the generic 1.5X tube.  These were on the F88SA1 carbine, and the Para Minimis. Along with our NADs of course.

I now have that EOTECH on my civvy firearm.

Regards,

OWDU

38 brigade are still using the C7A1s, we are "suppose" to get A2s next year though.

Could you explain to me how this works? I know I could read some obscure tech data on the subject, but if I could hear it firsthand that would be better. Just curious.

Most optics require your head to be positioned correctly behind them in order to attain an accurate sight picture.

An EOTech on the other hand, only requires that you be able to see the holographic red dot projected on the glass.  When you move your head around behind the EOTech it actually looks as though the dot is moving with you through the sight.  Despite this, the spot the red dot is aiming at will not change (provided that the weapon is held in position).

Shooting with both eyes open, it almost looks as if there is a holographic red ring with a dot in the center hovering in front of your face. Very cool and very fast.

Scope porn aside... to answer your question, it all depends on the unit and their policy on after market kit.

During your basic, SQ and DP1 (I heard they merged SQ and DP1?  I remember when it was QL2 and QL3..), you will use the Elcan.

On ex, chances are you will use the Elcan too, unless your RSM permits the use of aftermarket kit.

So to recap, it all depends on the directives given for aftermarket kit.  Some units allow it, some don't (to an extent).
