After a bit of banter with Franko, one of the mods here at Army.ca, I've decided to open this thread on common acronyms and phrases used commonly on this site that newbies may find useful.  Please, add more to it.  These are a couple that I was unsure of until I asked Franko.

Well, I think after Gunner's outstanding post, there ain't much left.  You probably could lock it up, there's plenty here now to help the newbies..........

I disagree... but with the whole principle in general...

Isn't there a thread out there right now that talks about using proper English,
grammer, and language, not using any elite speak, cute acronyms, etc...

I think the only acronyms that we could use would be military and none of those
have been posted.

But those are things they just need to be around to pick up.

dunno... just my 2 cents.

You will not use excessive webspeak, or other shorthand styles of typing. Please use English or French to the best of your ability; this makes it easier for those who are not posting in their native language.

This right from the Army.ca guidelines.  The keyword here being excessive.  My interpretation of this rule is not to have a post filled with nothing but acronyms or to post short replies of one line with half of it being acronyms.  Many of the mods use acronyms in their posts as a time saver - the purpose of this whole thread was for people to peruse and be able to see what they mean if they're unsure.

I use common acronyms in my posts and PM's to ease up on time. I guess it's one of those rules that has areas where it applies and does not. I don't think of these acronyms as webspeak, they are simple abbreviations. I guess, to me, someone using "IMHO" opposed to saying, "Can't talk, I'm @ work", looks more professional.

The main thing is that we don't and won't go chasing guys for using acronyms as they are an accepted part of this site and have been for some time (As long as I have been coming here) MSN speak and other shorthand simply makes a post hard to decipher, that is why we come down on it so hard.

IMHO using acronyms to save time is ok.

bUt I h8 wHeN pEePulL uSe MsN sPeEk, LoL oMg!11

As you can see there is a big difference between using acronyms to abbreviate words, and using "msn speak".  I think Scott put it best when it comes to this site.

Simply put if you use  excessive MSN speak be prepared to answer for it
