That's how I open everything, except, instead of a dinky little sabre, I use a 15th century highland claymore that I carry strapped to my back.
 
Actually my dad use to do that all the time when I was a kid. Worked every single time. The trick is to keep the blade flat to the bottle.
 
There was a French exchange officer at the Armd School in the mid '70's who used to regale the OCdt's in the Mess with this trick.
 
I saw an episode of 'Thirsty Traveller' on the Food Network where he went to France and they showed him how to do this.  It was very neat.
