A Manitoba-based soldier deployed twice to Afghanistan is being jailed for 90 days after he offered to pay a girl and a woman to have sex with him and a dog.
Tyson Larry Shiels of Canadian Forces Base Shilo admitted to contacting the 17-year-old teen and the woman online last September and offered both $2,000 to have sex.
Court heard that Shiels, who is 31, also sent them explicit images of himself.
Charges of bestiality were dropped after he pleaded guilty in December to trying to solicit illicit sex and circulating obscene material.
Defence lawyer Michael Dubois suggested to court that Shiels’ crimes may be the result of 18 months he served in Afghanistan during a 10-year career in which he served with distinction.
Dubois also says that, sometime after the charges were laid, Shiels moved away from the base because he had been forced from his vehicle, beaten and left by the side of the road.
Shiels remains employed with the Department of National Defence, but a CFB Shilo spokesman says the soldier’s employment at the base is under review.
