OTTAWA â “ A Canadian Forces pilot serving on exchange with the United States Marine Corps died at 8:10 p.m. yesterday from injuries sustained when his F/A-18 Hornet aircraft crashed on landing at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, South Carolina.
Capt Derek Nichols, 34, from Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, had been on exchange with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122, â Å“The Crusadersâ ?, in Beaufort, South Carolina since July 2001.
The accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. yesterday during landing at MCAS Beaufort. Capt Nichols was transported by military helicopter to Savannah Memorial Hospital, Savannah Georgia where he died from his injuries.
The single seat aircraft was among several F/A-18s returning from Denmark where they had participated in NATO Exercise Clean Hunter 04.
â Å“I am deeply saddened by this tragic accident,â ? said General Ray Henault, Chief of the Defence Staff. â Å“On behalf of all Canadian Forces members, I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Capt Nichols' family and friends.â ?
The cause of the accident is under investigation. A Canadian Forces officer from the Directorate of Flight Safety will act as an observer with the U.S. accident investigation team.
Canada currently has about 100 Canadian Forces members serving on exchange with the U.S. military.
