Mess Kit is a uniform and should not be worn as a costume.  Also this is the first time I have seen a command badge worn on mess kit.

Realistically you should plan on 6 evenings per month and more likely two weekends a month.  One for unit training and the other for courses.  As suggested stop in and see a local recruiter at the unit nearest your location.
