Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

ThanksĀ  :salute: In short, I can't justify a carrier right now. I am more worried about sustainability of the Canadian Navy to maintain a steady tempo of deployments yearly, besides the current cycle of major deployments one year, and the next year almost none. After we fix the sustainability...

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

I know. Other than satisfying Hiller's BHS requirements, I myself am having trouble justifying a major capital ship purchase of this magnitude, besides a desire to see a proper Blue-water navy for Canada. I just showed how it can be escorted with current ships in place and with what needs to be...

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

I have been chewing on this issue for a short bit, and I think I have a solution. It's highly idealistic, but I tried to take into account for some of the variables, and have made allowances for sustainability. Warships Current fleet: 1. The 12 Halifax class frigates: 8 of them can be set aside...

    CASR Editoral

I am taking offense with another one of their articles: http://www.sfu.ca/casr/mp-jss-bhs-navy.htm They are proposing (again) that we use Canadian-built catamarans as a transport. I remember the last time the government built aluminum catamarans in Canada! They were crap (remember the...

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

I am thinking more of a LHD type warship, a ship that can land troops and possibily launch fixed-wing airplanes. Something in the range of 15,000 to 24,000 tons for starters would be a good start and a decent balance between capability and costs.

Looks like C-17 is a done deal. Now, what's the official CF name for C-17? CC-170 Globemaster?

Another report of WMDs found in Iraq

I think this is the important part: Pre-Gulf War. Meaning before 1991. Meaning that these are most likely forgotten remains buried somewhere or left somewhere in the Iraqi desert from a previous conflict. And since it said degraded, it means almost useless, as chemical and biological weapons...

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

I don't think it is appropriate to look to how the Americans escort their aircraft carriers, as they have the largest and most expensive carriers in the world. Canada will probally never in our lifetime get a carrier that big. I think it is more appropirate to look at how nations with smaller...

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

To give an idea of crew requirements and air wing size for such a proposed small carrier, I've complied a list of them, and have included carrier-like landing ships as well. Airplane is also listed. Pure Aircraft Carriers: UK Invincible class VSTOL carrier Displacement: 20,500 tons full load...

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

Don't forget South Korea and their latest toy as well. I think that our Hornet's are the same as the USN Hornet's, sans some differences in the avionics suite.

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

He might be refering to a ship of the type of the South Korean Landing Platform eXperimental (LPX) Dokdo class Amphibious assault ship, which if fitted with a 15-17 meter in length ski-jump, can operate F-35B's or Harriers. Crew size is reasonable, around 300 men, which is around the same as the...

Harper government may face rough ride over military purchase

    1. It is more coventional for commerical operators to plan ahead for their fleets as their fleets age become obsolete. Replacing airplanes before they can no longer fly is important for fleet sustainability, and that is what we are currently lacking: fleet sustainability. With the current method...

Harper government may face rough ride over military purchase

I am not saying we should return to the old way of procurement (long and extremely drawn out, like the +10 years in regards to Sea King replacement). I am saying military procurement should mirror commerical procurement: a proper competition based on the merits of the product, price, and support...

Harper government may face rough ride over military purchase

It is a realistic propostion, as it is frequently done by airlines to get a better deal on their airplanes. And with the pie-in-the-sky comment, airlines frequently buy airplanes that don't exist or haven't flown yet. Look at Boeing's order book for the Boeing 787, an airplane that only exists...

Harper government may face rough ride over military purchase

Guys, Nemo's right. It is a good way to drive a good deal, even though you realistically won't consider the other deal. Say that you are considering the Russian Antonov jet strongly, and Boeing will drop their price or include extras for us. It is like buying a car, you mention you are...

Harper government may face rough ride over military purchase

With the Antonov, spare parts availability is an issue. For example, the Germans had trouble getting spare parts for their MiG-29 fleet and they are down the road from Russia (hence the reason why the Germans got rid of their MiG's). We may end up with a grounded Antonov fleet right when we need...

I am saying they CAN be cheaper (the up front cost of the airplane itself), if the government is any good with negotiating.

"O'Connor has $8B military 'wish list"

Nobody in the avaiation industry pays list price. For example, the price for a Boeing 747-400 is around $216 million dollars US. No one pays that price, period. Most pay at least 30% cheaper than list price or more. So if you see a price for an airplane quoted by the manufacturer, take it with a...

"O'Connor has $8B military 'wish list"

Very true. However, with the limited defence budget, it is perhaps a good idea to get the most capable airplane we can get for our dollar. Buying both C-17 strategic and A400M for tactical airlift will mean that they both will add a good deal of capability to the CF for our limited funds.

Taliban commander defects... after recieving help from Canadian soldiers

http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2006/06/16/taliban-defection.html Well this is an unexpected sight... however, we can't always wait for Taliban commanders to fall ill for us to treat them and turn them to our side...
