Where have all the Lynx Gone ?

Do you think a re-built Lynx would've worked in  Afganistan?  Here's my observation:  .50 cal no good anymore, oops, it's back.  Tanks no good any more, oops, they're back.  M113's no damn good anywhere, oops, they're going over in their new life form. Seems that sometimes, there exists a good solution, but since it's already been done,so it's no good anymore.  A rebuilt/re-designed Lynx might be a good patrol/recce/escort vehicle with a new turret and weapon station.  The old M26 cupola was a huge farce, and of course we installed the maual version, not the powered version.  I think the Lynx would be way better than a G-Wagon anyday.  By the way, does anyone know where they all ended up?  The 50 or so from Germany went for scrap, 15 were destroyed in Suffield, 20 went to museums, where are the rest?  Anyone seen them? Heard a rumour they are in Cold Lake.  Oh, by the way, we KNOW it's not a tank or an MICV etc. so let's not start that conversation.  We know it's limitations.

Well I have advocated the upgrade to the Lynx with a MTU powerpack in the rear engine compartment.  A scaled down version of the powerpack we find in the Leopards, with engine and transmission together.  That would move the sprocket to the rear, and eliminate the drive shaft and Pillow Box, giving more room in the Crew Compartment.  The removal of the Diff and Final Drives in the front could mean the addition of more armour and double the Fuel capacity by adding another fuel tank.  If you wanted to upgrade the CC's hatch and wpn station....great.  Give the Observer a C6.  Upgrade the suspension...........

Unfortunately, we would have to remanufacture them, as the one's we had were starting to suffer from metal fatigue.

Don't ask.  You may not want to know.  They were sold to a shady dealer in Holland.  Watch the news and you will see some in the most unlikely places..... ;D

Many in Canada became Hard Targets or Gate Guards.
 
There are two Lynx sitting behind a shed at the old LETE.  I saw them last year when I went to the MSVS Demo day.  I crawled around them and htey seemed to be in OK shape considering they were just sitting in the open.  At least there was nothing living inside them.  I wondering if the 30 Leopards that were here in Ottawa are still out at NRC or if they have been moved along.  The more I look around this town, the more it looks like a giant surplus vehicle dumping ground.

 
1 Lynx sitting outside my window - right next to the T72, Sherman Firefly & CF5 - They had a place all ready for a Leo..... but looks like it won't be ready anytime soon - unless they break one in Afghanistan & 202 Wkshps ca`n't fix it.
 
There are bout 90 unaccounted for.  They have to be somewhere........
 
The powers that be have just installed one outside the front gate of RMC in Kingston....

As I said, watch the news.  They show up in places like Bosnia, Serbia, Iran, etc.  You will only get a quick glimpse of them in the background somewhere, but they have been seen.  Check some of the AFV sites for photos and you may find some painted up as para-military/police vehicles in former East Bloc countries.

Holland had a bunch of the same Recce vehicle.... some of those glimpses might have been of those

The Dutch 'Lynx' was/is completely different.  It has two hatches, side by side up front and a remote turret similar to the Marder.  It also has a large 'Escape Hatch' on the right side.  Quite a different vehicle altogether.
 
not arguing about it being somewhat different but, it just creates more rolling stock being seen in the background here and there

True on rolling stock part of the argument, but false on the AFV 'officiado' side.
 
Let's do do some speculation just for fun.  I like the idea of a new power pack/transmission in the rear, would really clean up the front end.
I like the features found on the Dutch version-large hatch on the side, observer up front.  A new turret with a .50/7.62 combination.  As stated, they are quietly bringing in TLAV's because the LAV "Just can't go everywhere" (Sorry to all you Star Wars Wheeled Freaks).  For the role the Lynx would fulfill, about 90 would be just right.  The R&D could be done quickly if Bombardier isn't involved, they basic hulls have been long paid for, the new power pack could be the same as the TLAV.  Oh, by the way, we once again, we know it's not a tank, so let's not wander down that comparison.  Anybody in Cold Lake seen any in the target yard?

This engine would not free up the front end.  It would still need the Pillow Box and Drive Shafts through the Crew Compartment and the Diff and Final Drives up front as there would be no room in the Engine Compartment for them.
 
Don't forget the "gate guardian" on the road into Base Borden from the town of Angus (can't find an image right now).

- Death of the crew, as there would then be no way to steer the vehicle...

- I think we started with 176 Lynx.  My first - which I signed for in March, 1976, was CFR 67-35908.  It was not quite nine years old!  A fine product of the Food Machinery Corporation - Ordinance Division, San Jose, California.

- I have a photo of the last Lynx to 'swim'.  Of the almost twenty vehs that were used in the swim camp, the Lynx was one of the few still swimable at the end.

- The 4CMBG Recce Sqn in 1988 (Recce Sqn 8 CH(PL)), would team up with C/S 60 (RHQ Recce Tp) to form a Sqn of four seven-car Troops for Troop training.  We then split in half, and went at it.  Twenty-eight Lynx trying to get the bounce on each other.  We had no mercy, and all of Germany West of the Iron Curtain was our playground.  I wonder if Bavaria ever recovered?

I spent a year trying to resolve a Lynx in limbo.  It finally came home.  Made me laugh when I read the thread title.
