Well... I certainly didn't have veiled threats of annexing Canada on my "Trump Presidency Mayhem" bingo card.

Not on your bingo card, or not on your bingo card until aver the inauguration?

With a population of 40 million, Canada would get the same number of senators ( 2 ) as Wyoming's half million.

Read another interesting stat, if there is a U.S. Civil War 2,

2.5 — Approximate percentage of the American population that died in the Civil War

That would be about 7 million killed today. Maybe more with modern weapons.

Yes, but how many representatives and electoral college votes would we get?????

Just as an aside. If Trudeau's argument to Trump was that Trump's tariffs would kill Canada's economy then he's stupider then I thought. Why would Trump give a rat's ass about Canada's economy? Is he trying to appeal to Trump's better nature? or mercy? I doubt even Trudeau would frame his arguments like that and rather those were suggestions came from Trump or some of his sycophants at the table.

🍻

I hope they invade during BlackFly season.

I think Trump is scared. Notice there are no steak knives on the table.

It was reported that when Trudeau said the tariffs would wreck Canada's economy, Trump replied that if Canada can't survive without ripping off the US to the tune of $100B every year then maybe it should be become the 51st state... which I think is a little shallow thinking.... it would make more sense that each province became a state.... helmet on

And if the Mexican drug problem could be brought under control, roll that country in as well. The country of North American would be the greatest country that ever existed.

Just the part east of Fernie and west of Manitoba.

It is an interesting thought experiment on how various options would impact voting results in the US federal elections...

Absolutely.

We should for sure act on all of that.

Not sure how that applies to the 51st statehood stuff which in the end is really dumb but a good troll but I’m all for people that dont like it here to go find greener pastures.

I gather he is implying that if Canada can't get it's house in order, they'll happily do it for us. That might be taken as a troll, but I also wouldn't be surprised if that idea landed on Trump's to-do list. He does have many unorthodox ideas.

Humor me for a moment; If any two western countries were to successfully merge, Canada and the US would be the most ideal pairing. They are the most closely aligned countries that share more culture across border than many other countries. Our economies and military are intertwined. There are immense resources on either side. Fortress North America is surrounded by ocean, and all border resources on the 49th could be re-positioned to bolster the much shorter southern border, if Mexico wasn't inclined to also merge, or a much shorter border yet if Mexico did.

It will never happen but is a fascinating, and long term, feature in NA History ....

Trolling on my part, admittedly, but a very slippery slope argument. And if you don't like decisions coming out of Ottawa, because what the hell do they know about (pick a region, any region)?" imagine central decisions out of Washington.

I think majority consent would need to be a big part of that.

The many many issues with that is provinces would never go for it. Why join a union when you would have less power than you have now. Quebec would go alone as they would not want to be a smaller voice in larger Anglo context. Atlantic Canada would balk at the idea as they would have even less of a voice.

Then there is the US that would not be too keen on weakening their position by having to accept what fortress North America would be.

We don’t have a Republic tradition and our system is entrenched in a constitutional monarchy/parliamentary system that Canada won’t want to abandon for a US style republic and I doubt the US would switch to parliamentary system.

Then it’s a culture clash.

This was settled with the war of independance. And then 1812. Canada does not want to be the USA. You’d likely end up with a balkanisation of Canada and then a weaker North America with too many players.

The best outcome is a European style arrangement with free open border travel and residency and joint currency with a North American parliament to deal with specific things while maintaining sovereignty.

If people want to be American so badly there is a process and they can follow it.

None of this is an issue really. We (Canada) will boot Trudeau out so hard, he will probably land in India (lucky him!) and we can sort out our nation.

Its one thing to try and pretend your sovereignty is above all but when your neighbour is a 350 LBS football lineman and we are a 125 LBS jockey, that argument goes one way. Keep the big beast called 'murica satisfied (they are very reasonable here) and then lets get on with our Trudeau free lives.

The US is eventually going to end up annexing Canada. If I had to guess how it happens.... we suffer some sort of National Unity Event which will more than likely be Québec succession. This then causes other simmering issues to rise to the surface with other successionist movements forming in Western Canada.

Québec becomes its own State, a Canadian Rump State remains with Western Canada probably lobbying to throw their hat in with the United States. The irony of this is that if Québec were to leave, the LPC would probably never govern what was left of Canada again as the Country would end up pivoting hard to the Right.

The question would be, what is to be done with Southern Ontario and Atlantic Canada?
